The Guild

Located at the corner of the Street at Villa Meruya residential precinct, The guild shows its introvert side with the solid and high border wall, the solid fence without a gap to peek. As if to withdraw from the noisy Jakarta city and build its own sanctuary, the guild is solid from the outside but open on the inside.

The Building consists of one master bedroom, living room, studio a place to work , a library, one open courtyard and a kitchen. The entrance is introduced by concrete, steel, glass and polycarbonate sheet. The access from public and private is separated by open air corridor. The access to the House and the Studio are separated by 2 x 2 m foyer. The bedroom is located on the 1st floor while the other program is located on the ground floor. The circulation is interlocked to give ease access for the owner to access the studio below. Living room and also the dining room with total area of 35 sqm located on ground floor, while the more private family rooms are located on the first floor and limited by the void of stairs to separate family area and the studio. Hot west – east tropical sunlight is blocked by placing solid wall and bathroom while the facade is open to the north-south orientation. Several pyramids shaped form is also introduced to allow sunlight coming to the middle of the building and allowing fresh air circulation through the small gaps in between glass and concrete. The building system uses an automatic watering system that applies zero greywater runoff and zero storm water runoff. It means the whole water is collected to the retention basin with 8 m3 capacity and 2.75 x 3 m of catchment basin with 1,5 m of depth that also contribute the catchment to the neighbor.

The studio is consist of 6 x 6 m square shape, a small void. The small void has a tapered skylight made of concrete with several small gaps to provide light and air circulation. The library named Omah which is open at the weekend has the size of 3,4 x 12,3 m. It is sunken at perimeter area, half below the height of 0:00 meters considering public access and the needs that require a condition to keep books from the sun and constant temperature with the minimum possible to use the air conditioner. At the heart of the house is a courtyard with a fish pond with a background of the 3.5 m radius circle window with 3.50 m looking through the family room. The Guild is one example of project which exercise the modification of form and program with interlocked circulation in the tropical climate of Jakarta, Indonesia.

Alfa Omega school is an educational building with spirit of locality. Located on Tangerang city, it sat on 11700 sqm area with the prior condition of swamp and paddy field. The design responded this unstable soil condition by raising structure to 2.1 m high above the ground. The site itself was chosen as part of design scheme, -corresponding to its natural surroundings, in order to give children sense of closeness to nature, thus invoking outdoor-learning experience.

(The building integrates 4 modular buildings, with efficient access point in one central court yard, due to limitation of local land zoning of what can be built and what can not be built.) The solution to answer the brief of the project is to create an optimum collaboration, or bridge relationship in economic and creative process of construction in two important levels of masonry steel and bamboo construction which can enrich the economic impact of surrounding.

Steel structure, not only for its ability to hold structural load effectively, is also chosen for its construction speed and vigorous durability. The whole building based on this framework, from foundation to roof component. Steel in its variation from thickness to treatments, opening chances in versatile details of design. While bamboo, on the other hand, are flexible matter that requires little maintance in long range which always available in that area. This availability also related to brick and concretes in that area.

The structure is combined with bamboo for roof to create parabolic shape which enhance the character of Nipah which can be tilted or bent while keeping the cost constraint on budget. The brick is stacked in solid void pattern to allow cross air circulation in the facade. Meanwhile the polished bare concrete is used as floor finishes as its durability for daily school activity.

The local craftsmanship are the answer of 3 problem, which is: 1. Optimum resource, 2. Time constraint, 3. Manpower. Material resource can be found within 5 km from site to accelerate development while reducing carbon footprint at the same time.

In 4 months range, the craftsman are categorized into two types: (1) Light structure, which is concentrated on roof. Constructed by triangular light steel frame per 600 mm, manpowered by 40 Sumedang craftsman. It’s low-cost material had reduced 30 % initial budget, using bamboo and Nipah entirely. (2) Heavy structure is built for modular classrooms by Salembaran craftsman constructing masonry and steel framework. By first 2 months, light structure craftsman had constructed dock, followed by roof and ceiling details. In followed 4 month they joined in heavy structure part. The school is built in 4 months time.

The school designed as passive cooling building, which relied heavily on natural cross air ventilation in its construction. The open high ceiling designed as airing pathway, followed by porous solid-void brick on each side of classroom’s wall. This way, interior air flow are circulated optimally without necessity to use air conditioner.

Realrich Sjarief on Interview with Berlogos Russia


The Indonesian architect, the founder of RAW Architecture, the organizer of the scholarship program and the free school of architecture OMAH, the author of the books told BERLOGOS about architecture as a cultural form, locality, general architectural education and specificity of Indonesian architecture.

– Realrich, you founded RAW Architecture in 2011, continuing the dynasty of builders in your family. Did this affect your practice?

– True, my father and my grandfather are respected construction engineers, well known for their skill. I went the other way, deciding to become an architect and creating my own architectural firm in 2011. The task of the RAW office, like many other firms, is to offer a professional product in a residential environment and improve the quality of life. But we focus on exploring the possibilities of each material and realize the importance of skill.

I take projects with which I can experiment, establish a connection using local solutions, it is always a point of growth.

– You organize a scholarship program, which annually attracts people from all over Southeast Asia, who want to study architecture from the very foundations. And you introduced a free OMAH school for young people. Personally for you, why is the architectural education of the population necessary no less than any other? What is most concerned about people, what are they more interested in?

– This is the fundamental basis in the career of the architect. I offer not only theory, but also real practice – the whole spectrum of the profession that we all love. Participants in the fellowship and fellowship program are interested in how to adapt in the rapidly changing architectural practice.

If you have seen the work of Paul Klee Versunkenheit (nach der Zeichuung), depicting a man without an ear, but with eyes, a huge nose and a mouth; then I would add a huge ear and one more detail – to be an architect, a person must have a huge heart.

I think after you get the basics and pass the internship, all you need is to believe in intuition and yourself. Your heart will follow the design.

– Does it happen that your students ask questions and try to answer them in their projects?

– Whole projects have always appeared on their own, as unique people. I ask students to rely on children’s experience or the most vivid memories (spatial or not) that they had. Then I ask you to translate it into the language of design. Form planning begins and the initial sketch begins. I put before them the main problem in the form of a site plan, and they often come up with very interesting solutions to how to design this site in accordance with their own understanding of architecture. Sometimes they are curious to develop a new language, and, I think, it’s worth knowing yourself to find your passion for design.

– What does stability mean to you? How do you interpret this term?

– First, when the design copes with a local problem and displays it in a workable urban environment. It is a viable design that can react to surrounding challenges. Secondly, sustainable design is not just an existing form of modern materials. It can adapt the strengths of the terrain, surroundings and local craftsmanship. Stable design is also able to solve any problems, whether economic or social.

For example, my project Alpha Omega from the beginning to the end exists due to the social involvement of the local community. The building determined the material that corresponds to the site and conditions. Since the site is a swamp, we raised the floor 210 cm above the ground. The object is designed with several holes, allowing the natural airflow to freely enter the room. Material for construction was found within a radius of 5 km.

– One of your projects is a bioclimatic house. What is their future? Will they be the privilege of some “elite”, or will it become the norm for all people in the world?

– This was my first project and experiment, a local solution to the housing problem. Bioclimatics means that design can support itself, like the body. For example, making holes, we can control the flow of air, which allows us to always maintain the optimum temperature inside the building. I think that to some extent such a design can be the next paradigm for the formation of a residential environment in the future. This is practically feasible and has already been used in many cases as a basis.

– You wrote Alpha: Never-Ending Discussion in Strange Architecture, which mentioned several levels of architecture and evaluation that shape our culture. Could you tell us about them in brief?

And, do you think, has the place of architecture in culture changed over time?

– I had an idea to gather thoughts to improve literacy in architecture, try to talk with young people in the OMAH library, based on the provisions of many books and lectures. One of them – “Understanding Architecture” Conway and Roenich – explains the importance of understanding the architecture, rather than its assessment. In one layer, architecture serves as an art, in the other Architecture as a form of cultural expression has not undergone major changes. Today’s architecture, especially the housing problem associated with the use and restriction of land, has raised interest in efficiency. It’s about what you can do with small spaces. The challenge is to shift project constraints through design.

– What is the role of architecture in Indonesian culture? How would you describe Indonesian architecture?

“My last project of the Alfa Omega school is probably an example of my interpretation of Indonesian architecture. Since the school is in a remote location, the construction depended on what was available on the site. It turned out that with the help of material and human resources, with bamboo, brick and steel for 4 months, you can build an object that can accommodate 1200 students.

In short, Indonesian architecture, in my opinion, is a design that depends on locality, attitudes to the specifics of the context and the specific situation of the site.

From Nothing To Something

Maybe that phrase describes me during my internship at RAW.
For 2 months I have completed my internship program in RAW It may be a very short 2-month period to have extensive knowledge in the world of architectural work. But here I can learn many things in terms of intimacy, togetherness, in addition to the thing about architecture.
It’s one of the best companies in Indonesia probably also in Indonesia. I am grateful for Principal Architect Mr. Realrich for me can do an internship program at Summer Fellowship Workshop 2017.

RAW is a place where I can learn whose name learns from our flaws not what our strengths are. I understand what is conveyed from our imagination into a design concept. Here also know and learn new things that I can not on my campus, ranging from softskill and our attitude in work.
I also learned that giving from best of good. From creating a floor plan that we have to understand and what goals we make for what. And we must also have sufficient precedent and who draw a concept until the client is willing to accept with the expected satisfaction.

And here I know that from a process that is done creatively and following the rules will produce satisfactory results.
I am also grateful for Associate Designers Kak Mifta, Kak Ali, Kak Asep for me to be able to add experience in RAW useful.
I am also grateful to the Designers, Aga, Tirta, Jajo “who have resigned”, Nida, Ica, Regi,
Gomes, Yuli who taught and guided me during my internship here. They are the “Dream Team” who can do anything, do a funny joke from a radio announcer to an impromptu music player
