Project Description
Located in East Jakarta, Nizamia Andalusia School is one of RAW Architecture’s educational case studies exploring how existing structures can be reactivated through minimal intervention. The project reuses 99% of a former office building, complemented by carefully inserted new spaces at the front. Two main strategies shape the design: maximizing spatial comfort while minimizing construction impact.
The process began by recognizing the existing wide span structure on the third floor. This condition became the starting point of a poetic gesture, where bridges connect new and existing building phases, allowing movement, interaction, and growth to unfold organically.
1. Poetic Process: Inspired by informal settlement cross programming, the school accommodates diverse activities within a compact and layered spatial arrangement. Classrooms and communal spaces are stacked vertically and linked through bridges, creating continuity across different phases of development. Recycled and locally sourced materials are integrated into the architectural language, expressing values of reuse, adaptability, and contextual sensitivity.
2. Bioclimatic Strategies: Responding to Jakarta’s tropical climate, open circulation, porous facades, and shaded corridors enable cross ventilation and reduce heat gain. Courtyards and vertical voids allow daylight to penetrate deep into the building, creating comfortable learning environments that rely on passive cooling strategies.
As the building took shape, programs continued to grow naturally. The ground floor lobby opens into a generous prayer space that acts as a communal anchor. Like a city, the school accommodates many activities within its walls. Inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, it unfolds layered narratives, where space becomes both activity and story.
This approach resonates with the concept of cross programming discussed by Rafael Moneo, positioning the school as a living body that supports learning, maturity, and collective life.
