Project Description
Gembrong Market is one of RAW Architecture’s case studies in market design. Located in Bogor, known as the “rain city,” the city sits at the foothills of Mt. Salak and experiences frequent rainfall (16-29 days per month), contributing to a cool temperature around 22-30°C. While Jakarta is a trade city, Bogor is like a garden city, also known as Buitenzorg, meaning “peaceful”.
The city’s topography shapes the project site, which has a unique 5,5 m level difference and double access at both the front & rear. Built in the 1960s, Gembrong Market holds a strong historical connection with the local community.
The new market accommodates up to 640 stalls (from 3-9 sqm), including groceries, textiles, electronics, food court, and a children’s playground serving wide range of ages and backgrounds. Further, we interpret the contextual reading through 2 design approaches:
Bioclimatic Architecture
- Create levels that connects the ground & lower level, minimize cut-and-fill interventions. The design apply a tent-like long-span roof to support flexible programs arranged within 6 x 6 grid, while allowing continous air circulation.
- Use perforated metal facades on both sides to enable cross-ventilation, reducing interior dampness and bring in soft, diffused daylight through an elongated skylight to reduce energy consumption.
Poetic Architecture
- Prioritize local materials for cost efficiency by utilizing resources that are readily available, fast to implement, and durable.
- Abstract the facade persona archetype expression from the silhouette of Mt. Salak.
In our practice, we’re inspired by readings from Carl Jung’s Collective Unconscious and Archetypes, Jeffrey Kipnis’s A Question Of Qualities: Essays In Architecture, and Paul Goldberger’s Why Architecture Matters. The key aspect of type, such as open plan, small kiosk, path and alley into a tent gesture provide its unique archetype persona, hero, shadow, and its duality.
