Project 25 – Kofuse

Project Description

Kofuse Coffee & Dine is an F&B project made for the brand of Kofuse Retro Fit Artisan Fine Dining, located on Cikajang Street, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. It is a renovation project from a previous nail art and spa building. Almost 75% of the existing structure is re-used. Some structural columns with an arch shape are added to strengthen the roof structure. The arch columns are also applied to the facade as an additional structure to support the canopy we made to shade the inner building from direct sunlight and heavy rainfall, considering its context in the tropical climate of Indonesia. The arch shape of the columns is then mirrored to the top, making the impression of minarets. The facade is illuminated by the lighting path, giving a dramatic effect once we enter the site at night and standing out the minarets as an anchor point on the face of the T-section.

The canopy grille which is refracted by light displays an artistic side that is emphasized by dynamic lighting lines and is framed by curved walls showing the beautiful side of this building.

After the pandemic of COVID-19, people get used to do activities from home. Therefore, we tend to provide a space that can stimulate the imagination and give a home vibe, with an intimate feeling and a familiarity of a poetic space. We divide the Kofuse Cafe & Dining area into 3 zones, including the main room, the private space, and the front yard. The private space results in a group of micro-rooms that imitate several adjacent islands, private enough for discussion activities but still can look outside through the vista.

In the indoor dining area, there is an existing building column in the middle, this column is then covered with a new curved structure that is in harmony with the other designs and is used as a dining area as well.

The walls are made from exposed concrete and masonry, with wood as a list to give a transition effect. The ceiling is covered by bamboo woven and layered with UV plastic behind it to keep the cool air from AC from flowing out through the ceiling. It gives the cafe the nuance of an unpretentious and aesthetic museum or gallery. All the materials used in this project can be easily found in nearby areas, even the andesite used for the front yard, promoting local craftsmanship. However, the localized approach is taken as a method to adjust the after-pandemic condition.

Finally, the era of COVID-19 really teaches us that something valuable in the future doesn’t always have to be expensive. The localized and adaptive reuse approach can always be a choice we offer to the client. Moreover, it gives us the spirit to be optimistic and always rise after the critical condition.

There seems to be a unity of the various materials that exist in this cafe bar area, wooden floors combined with hexagon tiles, bricks rubbed with white paint, and woven bamboo ceilings look harmonious with all the elements in the building.
