Reflection Letter:
Hello! I’m Anevay. I am now finishing my final semester in Bachelor of Design in Architecture at the University of Sydney. As I write this, I am still in disbelief that I was able to experience an internship at RAW. I wanted to do an internship at RAW to expand my current architectural knowledge to contemporary Indonesian architecture practices, and to experience architecture beyond university. I thought a month would be quite a long time, so far away from Sydney and my very naive uni student mindset, but I have learnt so much more than my previous two years in uni.
University could not teach me enough about how intimate architecture is, how valuable your connections are, not only to your clients, but with those in your team. The office itself is an example of this – everyone was immediately so kind and welcoming, willing to bring me along to shadow or participate in the works of the office, even giving me recommendations on what to experience in Jakarta. This sort of environment is really one of a kind – no question was ever a stupid one, and every opportunity became invaluable. I had always found learning architecture interesting, but after my internship, where everything I knew about architecture was being challenged daily, it became so so exciting. My experience in the office has reinforced the idea that an architecture degree is essentially a communications degree, and that teamwork is key for success, both personally and professionally. The firm experiments how we connect with tradition, breaking convention in such a fun and experimental way that has fundamentally shifted how I view the world around me.
I am so immensely thankful for the opportunity and would like to thank the analytic team and Kak Rich for guiding me under your wing, for accommodating my language barrier, and for including me in such interesting projects. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the space planning workshops and learn from Kak Rich about the importance about your mindset when interacting with everything, as I now understand how much you can gain from it. I would also like to thank all the fellow interns who were so warm and inclusive, despite me not being able to communicate as strongly as I wish I could have. I look forward to seeing what RAW accomplishes and wish you all the best. Thank you RAW, this experience has truly been one of a kind, and I will forever treasure all the memories made in that short period of time – it truly is the best office in the world <3
Kindest regards, Anevay Florizal
