Reflection Letter:

Dear RAW Team,

I recall being both thrilled and intrigued as a recent graduate navigating the shift from course work to actual professional practice, wondering how the flow of actual practice would affect my perspective on architecture. I deeply value the chance to complete my internship at the studio. My respect for the field has grown as a result of working closely with designers who preceived each brief with accuracy and commitment.

The most notable thing about my stay here was how naturally learning took place. It was never forceful. I discovered that I was learning new things just by being present, whether I was doing the work or participating in an unplanned conversation around someone’s screen. There were times when ideas sparks just from overhearing how teams approach details. And on other days I’d be out on construction sites listening to many other parties deciding how certain design with its consequences shapes into certain spaces. Moving from one site to another every week reminded me of how alive architecture can becomes once it leaves the page and taught me how to remain adaptable socially, emotionally, and physically.

My first intention for applying was to understand how it feels like to be part of the working environment. But I get something far more meaningful than that. Having a chance to also be involved in the earliest concept explorations teams with layers of schematic development gave me a chance to experience the pace and the pulse of a project. I was trained to think broadly, swiftly, and sensitively because of the fast-paced setting, where initial thoughts are given significant weight. And during it all I came to understanding how important communication is, especially in a studio that has many members with layered responsibilities. The process was hold together by quick partial discussion, shared thoughts on the design, and even by the smallest conversation.

As I look back, there’s nothing that can defines my exact gratitude towards all the designers involved in shaping me to ways I only begin to understand. The guidance, the time, the thoughts, and the effort put into me got me leaving this internship with a deeper sense of direction, a renewed excitement for the profession, and a genuine appreciation for the collaborative spirit that defines this studio. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to Kak Realrich for building such a supportive and open studio environment. Although we didn’t collaborate directly, the culture you’ve shaped made my learning experience meaningful.

Best regards,

Azzahra Shylla
