I have acquired a lot from these 2 months of internship at RAW. I begin with the motivation to improve myself as an architecture student, but it turns out that architecture is just a small portion of what RAW’s Summer Architecture Workshop have given me. There are 3 things beside the actual study of architecture that strikes me the most. First of what this workshop have given me is the chance to meet people, amazing ones.
The chance to meet fellow interns with their high motivation to Architecture and sharing the questions toward architecture that each of us hold. Meeting the Staff who have a vast knowledge to architecture and their skill to other field as well. To having the chance be inspired by the knowledge and skill of architecture to restaurant to freemasonry by the principal of RAW Architecture, Mr. Realrich Sjarief. He inspired me with the knowledge of broad field he have and yet still have the will to share it through OMAH or just from the small talks that we interns have with him. It is a pleasure meeting all of these great people, and hope there will be time where we could work together again in the future or just have a cup of coffee.
Second of what I have acquired here is the work ethics, the architecture work ethics. For all my short years of studying architecture, studio workflow has not been my favorite. But as it turns out it was all to prepare us to the work environment that the field of architecture have. We work together to produce many idea and innovation together in the shortest amount of time, pushing to have progress in the end of the day, and challenging ourself to improve with every design that we produce. A valuable experience that definitely have reshaped my ethics in working. And the most important lesson in the workflow of architecture that I witness here is collaboration, where we work together as a team. Something that is rare to see in the academic life.
And that brings me to the third and most important value of what this internship have given me, the chance to witness the atmosphere of RAW architecture. I have came across a video where Mr. Rich tell the student of ITB that RAW’s Office is inspired by the concept of “Ruang Hima”, a small space where many activities are cramped together by students. I think the concept and the attitude that Mr. Rich bring succeed in creating the RAW atmosphere, the feeling of home that the cramped space created, the attitude that brings the sense of family, the uniqueness of the space that inspire innovation plus the literal inspiration that OMAH books have from architecture theory to sef-help book to comic books.
I’ve read a book about Rem Koolhaass while searching for inspiration at OMAH and came across a comment from a former employee that started new office. He said that Rem is like a headmaster while OMA is actually the school, where Rem’s actual architecture is actually not in the buildings he created but rather the office he succeeded in creating that produce it’s own architecture. I believe that RAW is in the road towards that, and many more pureness of creativity and innovation will come out from the office of RAW.
Thank you for the opportunity that RAW gave me, these 2 months have been a wonderful experience.
