My name is Amelia Aussie, 3rd year architecture student at Petra Christian University Surabaya. In this letter, I would like to express my interest to join the RAW Internship Program. I’m highly motivated to join the internship at the RAW after seeing the projects done by RAW, especially when I visited Indonesialand 2016 in Bandung and saw the s(w)ar(w)ang installation. As the works and company profile complement my interest, I believe that being part of your company would not only enrich my architecture practice experience, but would also exhibit my maximum potential.
I am very passionate about architecture and design because I believe that architecture can make the world a better place to live in, especially architectural design which values sustainability. I have very high imagination skill in designing and sometimes my imagination went too far. During practice of architectural design, I enjoy experimenting with form the most. I feel delighted every time I find a unique form but most of the time my tutor encourages me to simplify the form to notice the value of function. But I think function is not the main concern and does not always precede the form (at least not on my design) as form has the power to express. Sometimes when you want to create some different experience or different ambiances on a space you need to be a little playful and experimental about form. It might be the reason that I enjoy my 6th semester (on-going) so much as the project is to design symbolic architecture.
I’m also very interested in structural design and building technology. I believe I’m very good at it (all A’s and great understanding in architectural structure courses). The study of basic architectural courses, such as architectural structure, mechanics and materials science, makes me realize that architecture not only gives importance on aesthetics, but also emphasizes on the more essential functionality and practicality. In that process, I realized that architecture is not only an art, but also more importantly a technology. Elaborating form, structure and technology in architecture, I find post-modern, innovative and high-rise architecture designs very fascinating.
One of my other interests beside architecture is science and technology. I love how new technologies are invented and how far science can go. I think science is cool instead of lame because science help to create an intelligent architectural design. Another interests of mine is art, music, literature. I’m studying music since I was four and it helps to calm me down when I got stressed. Music helped me to balance my brain and improve my IQ. Recently I took examination and got diploma title from UK ABRSM (Associated Board Royal School of Music) in Piano Performance. I got a high score and had the graduation in Singapore.
In the future, I would like to continue my architecture study in the UK since my parents are willing to be my benefactors. They trust me to achieve my goal which is to make the world better place and I’m 100% sure that architecture has always been changing the world.
