My name is Jasson. I am third-year architecture student from Universitas Tarumanagara Jakarta. I’m writing this letter as part of my application for 2 months internship programme at RAW.
The main intention of this application is to fulfil student’s pre-requirement for taking Final-Year Project Studio (Studio Tugas Akhir) in next 8th semester. More than just administrative purpose, I’m also wish to get a real, direct experience about professional practice of architecture. As I believe, to be a good architect means to fully understand how architecture itself works in both technical skills and theoretic knowledge of spatial management.
Since 2014, I’ve take study about architecture for some reasons. First, I can deliver my potentials in drawing and creative thinking. Secondly, and the most cliché one, is I think that architecture is among easiest career options to be taken. But later, I realized architecture is not only about visually-pleasant building sketches and brilliant ideas. Architecture is about human itself; how we dealing with our surroundings in order to survive and living with safe and sound, in a set of suitable spaces for living and working.
To ensure these needs being fulfilled properly is the main concern of architecture. As architects, we must consciously understand the implication of our design in solving everyday problems with very minimal risks to its users. This matter also needs adequate knowledge, full-time experience, and ethical responsibilities toward its decision making. I, too, aware of these responsibilities and realized my skills and knowledge still below the requirements. Feel this urgency, I dare to apply internship to learn more about the right way to practice as professional architect.
My main interest in architecture study is theory and critics of architecture. Towards design critics, I believe this aspect also essential to ensuring designed spaces optimally and sensibly accommodate its users’ needs. As far as I see, this aspect often being forgotten from our recent practice habit, caused by public stigma of critics’ negative prejudices and degenerative commentaries. However, the actual goal of design critics is to appreciate and re-evaluate the chosen design decisions, which its results could be used for next, better decisions. And a good critic should be fully know how design works in both ways of architecture practice, as I’ve stated in the beginning. This too encourage me to take this programme.
Why I choose RAW as place for my internship programme? I remember your statement in my first presentation on OMAH Library last September, that to make owner (design users) feel satisfied is the top priority for architects’ job. I found this statement is consistent with two of your projects, Alpha Omega School Kosambi and The Guild. Their relevance to surrounding contexts and their optimal designs to allocate wide-variety of daily activities even make me believe these works are really relevant with that view. My recent experience as OMAH volunteer librarian for these 3 months, with meeting many professionals and participating its research and events, also motivates me to entrust my first practical experience with your team.
I realized that my weaknesses are poor time management and low self-confidence on my own capabilities.
