The 99%-almost-finished Tunas Muda Kindergarten

The 99%-almost-finished Tunas Muda Kindergarten project began with exploring the school complex to determine potential areas for development. Our attention was focused on the existing dormitory building as the starting point for the construction. This building is historically significant memory for the clients and everyone who has worked at Tunas Muda. However, because of its historical value, this building was still intact and had yet to be redesigned. We also tried to utilize it by reusing the existing structure.

This is the meaning of Young Shoots for us, small things that spark new things, just as shoots emerge from plant seeds and will grow into plants. That’s the cycle of life.

We maintained the existing perimeter wall with a span of 19 meters and one dividing wall in the middle. We placed the cremona structure for the roof with a very light UPVC covering so that the wide-span structure could bear the load. We also used the leveling of the land, which had fallen 80 cm, to get a sizeable welcoming area by adding stairs and ramps, and this also streamlined costs for creating new foundations. Currently, Tunas Muda Kindergarten has five classrooms, a multipurpose room, a mini zoo, and two parks. The lounge area was made continuous to form a corridor with a translucent roof to let in light.

From the outside, the front facade exudes simplicity with a circular entrance area adorned with a fresh coat of white paint. The remaining walls, adorned with plants, are part of the existing property that we have chosen to maintain. This design approach allows the historic building to be repurposed with minimal changes, preserving its unique character. However, the true beauty of this building lies within, with many surprises awaiting discovery. This project is significant for our client to commemorate a historic building through a new function filled with children’s laughter.
