Guha Boboto is a building that has various functions that can also help reduce the operational expenditure of the building and maintain economic independence for families living in Boboto. Guha Boboto consists of four key components: a boarding house and a family-operated stall to support a family home while sustaining the community efforts in literacy with the library concept.
The boarding house itself is divided into 2 types: the first is a boarding house and a temporary boarding house for staffs and craftsmen. This setup allows flexibility to meet the needs of the Boboto family and provides space for visiting family members when needed. The family-operated stall has been part of the Guha Boboto since the 1990s. The library and the boarding house are open in 2024.
Originally the structure built in the 1990s with a basic plywood structure, the building has been upgraded with repurposed plywood transformed into glulam, and recently reinforced with lightweight steel and locally sourced glulam. Most materials used are recycled, including roof coverings, steel rods, bricks, aluminum, and glass.
The library within Guha Boboto plays a crucial role as a guardian and functions as a community activity center. Its goal is to support literacy in Indonesia by offering a space for communal learning and activities. The building is also designed to be easily constructed by anyone without requiring specialized skills, using local and low-cost materials. This also aligns with our studio’s vision that architecture does not need to look luxurious or glamorous; even simple and locally sourced materials can create aesthetically pleasing designs.
