The idea of our design of Gembrong Market is about accommodating an adequate number of stall units, emphasizing an inclusive design process led by the operator for arranging area zoning and layout, so the number is based on dialogue between stalls and business feasibility. It resulted in almost 200 wet market stalls, almost 400 dry market stalls, nearly 50 F&B stalls, 2 playgrounds, and a multipurpose hall. A key market feature is the integration of F&B spaces and children’s areas on the rooftop, creating vibrant anchors for the community. The ground floor is dedicated to a wet market, serving as another anchor.
Hygiene is a top priority in our design of the Gembrong Market. We have envisioned a market equipped with floor drains and grating to manage water flow in the wet market area effectively. Our design aims to cool down the temperature to 28 degrees Celsius by introducing voids that reduce the need for artificial lighting. The open, curved roof design allows for air gaps that enhance ventilation, creating a functional interior that is business viable and an open-air public space that reconnects with the city through affordable problem-solving solutions. Introducing an atrium allows natural sunlight to illuminate the inner core, minimizing the reliance on air conditioning and maximizing daylight.
Through this project, We grow our relationship and architecture grammar and patterns, evolving from personal or residential projects to more public projects. We believe that architecture is fundamentally about relationships rather than mere technical skills. It transcends aesthetics but is a way to understand basic design to create a viable business market while creating an aesthetically pleasing environment that makes people happy by having well-performed thermal performance.
