Taslim Bioclimatic Home 1st Phase

This house was designed in 2011, about 14 years ago, and the project is still ongoing, having now entered the third stage of construction in 2024. It began with the needs of our clients, who desired a home that facilitates 3 families living together. Located in Alam Sutera, the house with an area of around 3000 m² features a cluster concept, allowing each family member to have their privacy and space for expression while still feeling connected to one another. This cluster concept aligns with research from a Harvard Medical School study, which indicates that the quality of relationships with family and the community significantly impacts health, happiness, and longevity. We believe that a home designed for multigenerational living reflects health and embodies a unique Indonesian harmony.

We adopted a bioclimatic approach to enhance thermal comfort by considering sun orientation, with roof angles opening toward the north and closing toward the west. Each corner of the house is designed to receive sunlight and fresh air, incorporating long overhangs, lattices, and surrounding trees to filter sunlight from the west and east.

At our studio, we have learned that continuous adaptation to changes over time is fundamental. In designing a house, finding abstraction within the process is crucial, as it allows us to align our vision with the client’s desires. We also found that the fight to find abstraction in this lengthy architectural process also aligns with what Carlo Scarpa has accomplished in Italy, such as the renovation of Museo Castelvecchio and the design of Banca Popolare in Verona, both of which took decades. In our studio, we foster a collaborative environment where contributions come from all levels, top down and bottom up. This emphasis on craftsmanship and grassroots detailing ensures that everyone is part of the process, enhancing our architectural studio practice.
