This project is located in Taman Permata Buana, Jakarta. The location faces the east side and is opposite a residential park. This project uses 80% of the old walls and structures to reduce construction costs optimally. The renovation is designed with a unique shape with simple exposed concrete materials and is equipped with balconies and canopies to protect the building from excessive sunlight.
The client dreamed of a house with natural light, passive cooling, aesthetics, and affordable costs and maintenance. To fulfill these desires, this project carries an open-plan concept combining indoor and outdoor spaces, providing an intimate space experience with wide gaps between spaces to maximize natural lighting.
The continuity of the design from inside and outside helps maximize the quality of the ground floor space. The living room facing the yard or small garden creates a more private and intimate space. The design of this house also has a unique shape that responds to the angle of sunlight from the east side, which is maximum at 10 am. The shape is formed by cavities that allow light to enter and can be used for cross-ventilation.
Natural light enters from the north and south through skylights and from the front and back through openings, ensuring that all rooms are exposed to natural sunlight and have good air circulation. The building uses raw materials, such as cement, brick, steel, wood, rough tiles, and terrazzo, showing layers of Javanese craftsmanship, where everything combines to create unity but also diversity in its interior and architecture.
This project illustrates a bioclimatic design by utilizing small gardens, natural light, passive cooling, diversity of materials, but still with easy maintenance to improve the quality of life indoors and outdoors. This design is also suitable for dense urban areas, with construction that can be done at a minimal cost and simple craftsmanship techniques, and all of these approaches underline the approach in our studio to create an earthy, environmentally friendly beauty in residential design in Jakarta.
