This project is like our expedition on working in bigger scale, with existing structure, and public function room which has long history. our design begins with activating and renovating the facade and lobby, aim to create a optimised thermal comfort performance for Balai Kartini, integrated with the philosophy and functions of the convention center, gallery, auditorium, and restaurant within its 3,000m² space, planned in phases.
Balai Kartini is a cultural and historical reconstruction where it’s hot at the west side, and it lacks a storytelling of space. The design emphasizes understated beauty that emerges from interiority to architecture. In the interiority, the design proposes Kartini’s spirit and legacy through symbols, storytelling of traditional Nusantara patterns like weaving, ikat, and batik, which have become Indonesia’s heritage to the world. The project was launched with a strong commitment: to transform Balai Kartini into a home for the Kartini of the future.
In the outside, the vertical louvers on the building’s structure evoke the grandeur of Nusantara temple stupas, while also reducing the heat of the sunlight entering the main lobby. The result is a shadow cast onto the old floor, which has been revitalized and polished. The grain patterns in the floor remind us of a design rooted in history, that forms the foundation of Kartini’s struggle. Every design aspect was carefully considered for energy efficiency, cost, and maintenance.
This project illustrates process to document many hopes, reborn through tears and struggles. The spirit of Kartini, that touches the heart, inspires us to always spread goodness and provide a “home” for Indonesia’s future.
