Our heartfelt thanks goes to ACICIS for inviting Ar. Realrich Sjarief as a speaker in the discussion “Sustainability Design: Products, Branding, and Space” held at Atma Jaya University on Tuesday, January 14th, 2025. It was a great moment to engage with international students on how sustainability intersects with branding, products, and spatial design, and how we can continue to push boundaries in our practices.
Ar. Realrich Sjarief discussed about how Indonesia has so much inspiration to offer the world, with different places having their own unique characteristics. From architecture that responds to its environment to branding strategies that emphasize local values, everything demonstrates that sustainability is an approach that can be applied across various disciplines.
In this session, he also discussed the importance of communication skills, how sustainable ideas can be translated into impactful design, products, and branding. Interestingly, the students was not only from the field of architecture but also from various other disciplines, so we try to tell them that sustainability is a cross-disciplinary issue that requires collaboration. Through our project at Guha the Guild, we explored how a space can grow sustainably, not only in terms of materials but also by fostering engagement with craftsmen and achieving bioclimatic architecture through various experimentation and design analytics in the process.
Ar. Realrich Sjarief also spoke about a figure he greatly admires, Pak Eko Prawoto, who has taught many valuable lessons through the strong spirit of the village, how we need to learn from him about the power of humility and the deep meaning of life found in simplicity. The new Indonesian architecture should emerge from local wisdom and a sensitivity to nature.
During this experience, we had the opportunity to meet one of our interns, @itsgaric. It was a great moment for us to connect and get to know each other before he begins his learning journey at our office. We’re excited for what’s to come and hope to collaborate more with ACICIS @acicis.studyabroad in the future!
