Noah Kindergarten is a new kindergarten project located in Cipinang, East Jakarta. It is built in a hot and humid area, within a rather enclosed space. Therefore, the design considers the following questions: How can a kindergarten host an inclusive space while responding to its tropical context? What are the barriers, and how can a simple, groundbreaking sequence overcome them?
The design responds by prioritizing the child’s journey—how they enter, feel, and explore—within a safe, creative, and climate-responsive space.
From the lobby, an open expanse flows seamlessly to a playground, connecting every level with accessible, open areas. The ground floor offers a unified, safe space; the first floor links to an open swimming pool and landscape; the second floor ties together a library, terraces, and an open auditorium; and the rooftop blends sports with a garden of endemic plants.
Corridors, open to natural air, are crafted from a child’s perspective portraying explorative portals into varied “worlds”, all while ensuring disability access and intuitive navigation. Addressing spatial barriers, the classrooms adopt a simple, double-loaded corridor layout to maximize efficiency, while the building is lifted above ground as a safety measure against flooding in the area, and to house utilities and parking below.
Slanted terraces and façades respond to tropical challenges, shading the harsh west sun and cooling corridors between classrooms and the exterior—creating a bioclimatic design that minimizes reliance on air conditioning. The south-facing roof channels indirect light into the auditorium, enhancing comfort.
The building is now well on its way. The kindergarten aims to bring reassurance and security for its children, combining spaces of learning with a close connection to nature. Noah Kindergarten hopes to shape an open-minded education for the future.
