Sapo named by the client, is a tranquil, multifunctional sanctuary that celebrates personal retreat while honoring the Batak Karo vernacular village, Siwaluh Jabu. In Karo culture of Sumatra, “Sapo” is a rest house where farmers reflect while overlooking their fields.
The house reflects the client’s vision of a peaceful space for solitary remote work and a sanctuary for growing old in harmony with nature. Inspired by the metaphor of a mountain, the house’s silhouette recalls the Siwaluh Jabu form. Its undulating canopy shades the ground floor while echoing Karo’s natural landscape. Built with steel, concrete, and bitumen finishes, the structure ensures durability and efficient construction. The low-rise, dual-angled pyramid roof adds to its sculptural identity.
Surrounded by terraces that harness afternoon and evening sunlight. Preserved trees act as natural sunshades, while latticework filters light into the interior, creating a calm, inviting atmosphere. Building simulations helped optimize daylight and thermal comfort.
Inside, the house includes a living room, bedroom, gym, workspace, and gardens. At the center is an open atrium, lit by patterned skylights. A stained-glass crown on the roof continues the organic language, flowing into the canopy and wings.
Ceiling patterns inspired by traditional Indonesian textiles bring cultural richness and transform the central area into a temple-like retreat for contemplation and rest.
