Referred to as Craftsmen”s

Referred to as craftsmen’s housing or architecture of the poor, these spaces are constructed on extremely modest budgets sometimes as low as IDR 1 million per square meter yet they are tactically intelligent, materially efficient, and socially responsive. The same spirit lives on in Indonesia’s vernacular heritage: from the elevated rumah panggung of Sumatra to the modular Joglo of Central Java, each exemplifies how to build wisely with limited means, responding to local conditions while subtly resisting centralized systems of exclusion.

In RAW’s design, Boboto project, this spirit is embraced through the use of available, repurposed materials and vernacular construction logic. Materials such as Jambi wood, plywood, scrap timber, and glue-laminated timber (Glulam) were all sourced and processed on-site, making the entire construction process both cost-efficient and environmentally responsible.

“What is being built here has long existed in villages, it’s a simple solution that is easy to implement.”
