Java House

The Java House was finished in 2015. It explores poetic architecture shaped by abstract poetic philosophy, architecture theories, and materialities where space unfolds gradually and privacy is formed through transition rather than enclosures, boundaries remain soft, movement is deliberate, and intimacy is achieved through depth rather than separation. Strategies:

  1. The plan is composed as a series of overlapping planes and courtyards. In the middle of the inside-outside foyer, a tumpang sari skylight, welcoming visitors with the grammatics of the traditional stacks of wood and flat glass before they move deeper into the house.
  2. Walls guide movement, frame views, and create moments of pause, allowing the house to be experienced as a continuous sequence rather than a collection of rooms.
  3. Each bedroom is paired with its own views of the garden, forming a personal environment that remains closely connected to light, air, and nature. The open façade, expressed through a rhythmic arrangement of red brick and timber panels, responds to western heat while supporting north–south cross ventilation. Crafted by local artisans, these materials convey warmth, restraint, and durability. Skylights and clerestory openings bring daylight deep into the interior, casting a soft, even light throughout the house.

As a conclusion, the heart of the house, an open living area extends toward a garden terrace, creating a courtyard-like space for daily activities and family gatherings. The landscape, composed of native planting and a modest lawn, softens the urban context, cools the microclimate, and grounds the house in its natural setting.

Built on a compact site, Java House relies on passive cooling strategies and local materials to maintain comfort and efficiency. Designed to support family life over time, the house allows everyday routines to unfold naturally, balancing privacy, openness, and shared living.
