Located in Jakarta, Tunas Muda Kindergarten’s architectural design approach begins with consciousness of the historical context by preserving the existing walls, columns, and foundations as the basis for the new order. In detail, the design maintain the existing creepers along the perimeter wall, combined with a circular door and entrance pathways softened by curved geometries. It aims to create a child-friendly and approachable environment.
The design strategy also utilizes the existing level difference (almost a meter drop from ground level) in order to minimize land cut and fill, which later turned into a welcoming arrival area by employing ramp and stairs.
The plan “journey to the garden” is organized around a double-loaded corridor with skylight that accommodates five flexible classrooms, one multipurpose room, and a playground. The strategies forms a clear internal journey that leads toward two gardens on either side. A 19-meter plane truss Cremona structural system spans the existing structure without adding new columns. This approach allows the space beneath to remain open and flexible, accommodating multiple children activity in the classroom such as presenting, performance, and pin-up display. Bioclimatic performance is approached by adding cantilevered canopy avoiding east-west thermal radiation.
In summary, as an architecture case study on an education project for accommodating creative children activities, Tunas Muda Kindergarten embodies a method of reading context, placing sequences, integrating bioclimatic design to achieve poetic spaces. It symbolizes growth, transformation, and potential, while integrating sustainability through the reuse and adaptation of existing on-site resources.
