Beyond the Blueprint
A Journey into the Soul of Architecture
To my RAW Architecture Family,
As I complete my final week at RAW, I find myself reflecting on a journey that feels far more significant than the end of an internship. When I first walked into the studio, I came seeking professional experience. I leave with something much deeper, a shift in how I see architecture, and my place within it.
Architecture as a Universal Language
At RAW, I began to understand that architecture is not just about drawings, details, or efficiency. It is a language, one that communicates through material honesty, climate responsiveness, and the emotions a space can evoke. The idea of creating work that can truly “touch the heart,” something I often heard from Kak Rich, has stayed with me.
Working on projects that balance bioclimatic thinking with a strong sense of identity pushed me to think beyond solutions and toward meaning. It made me realize that while architecture is rooted in context, its impact is universal.
Alongside this, one idea that deeply resonated with me was the notion of a plural sense in architecture, that a building is never experienced in a singular way. It holds multiple readings, multiple emotions, and multiple narratives at once. I began to see how RAW’s projects embrace this plurality where spaces are not fixed in meaning, but open to interpretation, shaped by light, material, and the people who inhabit them. This shifted my understanding of design from creating answers to creating possibilities.
The Restless Spirit
The idea of the “Restless Spirit” is something I will carry forward. It has taught me to stay curious and attentive, to see even the smallest detail as an opportunity to contribute to the larger experience of a space. What once felt like minor elements now feel intentional and meaningful.
RAW has given me a new lens. Whether observing local craftsmanship or engaging with broader architectural ideas, I’ve begun to appreciate the balance between responsibility, sensitivity, and creativity.
A Collective That Feels Like Home
Beyond the work, what I will remember most is the people. The studio truly feels like a collective, what you call the “Collective Cave.”
To Kak Rich and Kak Yudith, thank you for creating an environment where learning feels open, human, and deeply engaging. You’ve shown me that a studio can be both rigorous and warm at the same time.
To everyone who guided me and worked alongside me, thank you for the conversations, the shared moments, and the everyday energy that made this experience so memorable.
An End, and a Beginning
I arrived as a student looking to learn. I leave with a clearer sense of direction and a deeper curiosity for what lies ahead. This may be the end of my time at RAW, but it feels more like the beginning of a longer journey, one shaped by the values I’ve learned here.
I hope to carry these lessons forward, wherever I go next.
Thank you for everything.
With gratitude,
Manas Yatin Gawade
