Nizamia School

Our innovative #rawcollectivecave approach on Nizamia Andalusia is inspired by the kampong cross-programming arrangement that integrates diverse design elements, such as recycled materials, within the structure. We repurpose the existing buildings, adapt their modules for classrooms, and strategically add the new structures needed.

Like a city, Andalusia Nizamia School accommodates many activities within its walls. Inspired by the tales of 1001 Arabian Nights, the school unfolds 1001 stories from dawn to dusk. Here, stories are an activity, core function, and program. This approach resonates with the cross-programming philosophy discussed by Rafael Moneo in “Theoretical Anxiety and Design Strategies in the Work of Eight Contemporary Architects” and practiced by architects like Rem Koolhaas.

This concept is applied in the organization of each space. The ground-floor lobby opens into a spacious prayer area, followed by classrooms and gathering spaces above. The third floor connects additional gathering spaces via bridges to the preceding building phases.

Classrooms and other spaces continue to evolve, culminating in sports facilities stands in rooftop areas. This underscores the importance of gathering, playing, and praying in the learning environment.

For us, the term “high” in “junior high school” means a higher level of maturity than “elementary” school students. Their thinking has begun to be elaborated, and they have begun to be able to act independently. From Nizamia, we learn that maturity development can be met with architectural impulses.
