Here is the synopsis of the presentation :

Indonesia, a vast archipelago brimming with cultural diversity, faces critical challenges: unaffordable housing, a culture of status quo, and gaps in literacy and critical thinking. Yet, its tropical climate, abundant materials, skilled craftsmanship, and rich historical inspirations offer immense potential.

Realrich, principal of RAW Architecture, will deliver a lecture in Korea exploring the philosophy of the “underdog studio” through the lens of Roots and Reach. Roots embody a radical, fundamental philosophy of survival—grounded in the resilience and essentials of human existence across Jakarta’s urban density, Yogyakarta’s cultural heart, Indonesia’s vernacular areas, and the envisioned Nusantara. Reach envisions independence and liberation through cooperation, inspired by Indonesia’s declaration of freedom, aspiring toward transformative futures in these diverse contexts.

This discourse examines the limit of architecture—the boundaries of space, form, and order—where constraints of site, culture, and resources shape innovative solutions. Using Jakarta, Yogyakarta, vernacular areas, and Nusantara as case studies, the lecture navigates disparities between urban and rural, center and periphery, and the tension between modernity and vernacularity. It will also reflect on Nusantara as an architectural concept of a postcolonial move, redefining identity and progress within the limits of spatial and formal order.

At its core, RAW Architecture’s ecosystem is driven by design by research, responding dynamically to data, climate, economic constraints, management, community needs, symbolic meaning, and visionary aspirations. As architects, academics, and lifelong learners, we anchor ourselves in roots to address challenges in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, vernacular areas, and Nusantara, reaching beyond the limits of architecture to create imaginative, inclusive solutions that empower the underserved.

3년전 동남아시아 5개국 13명의 건축가들과 서면 인터뷰를 했었다. 많은 리서치를 통해 선별된 건축가들과의 대화는 서로가 서로에 대해 너무 모르고 무관심 했구나를 인지하게된 계기가 되었다.
각국의 건축가들은 자신만의 언어로 지역에 대한 괸심을 어떻게 건축의 결과물에 녹였는지를 보다보니 각 역사적 지역적 특성이 잘 읽혔다.
우리는 우리의 위치와 방향을 알려면 더 다양한 문화를 베이스로한 건축을 둘러보아야한다.
지난달 말레이시아의 케빈의 강의도 너무 좋았지만 인터뷰 한 건축가들중 가장 젊고 지역의 고유문화에 대한 애정과 관심을 건축화하는데 많은 이야기를 나눴던 리얼리치의 다음주 강의가 기대된다.

한국에서 언제 인도네시아 건축가의 작업 이야기를 직접 듣고 이야기 나눌수 있겠는가?
