IMG_20131104_223501” The world would never amount to a hill of beans if people didn’t use their imaginations to think of the impossible.”- Pete Seeger.

Almost always the men who achieve these fundamental inventions of a new paradigm have been either very young or very new to the field whose paradigm they change. — Thomas S. Kuhn

02 February 2014 I’ve just got a wonderful quote about facing our life with smile and planning ”

Whatever happened in the past is over. Do not dwell on past mistakes. There’s no point crying over spilt milk. Everybody makes mistakes. It’s what you learn from the mistakes, and promising yourself not to repeat those mistakes that matters. When you miss opportunities, don’t dwell on it, as there are always new opportunities on the horizon.

Being able to smile when being slightly misunderstood is good upbringing. When you’re wronged and you smile with calmness, it is generosity. When you’re being taken advantage of and you can smile, you’re being open-minded. When you are helpless and you can do a philosophical smile, you’re in a calm state. When you’re in distress and you can laugh out loud, you’re being generous. When you’re looked down and you can calmly smile, you’re being confident. When you’re being jilted in relationships and you can smile it off, you’re being suave.”

Dear Kak Rich,

It’s probably one of the hardest phase of my life. I’m no bragging about it. But truly, leaving this office and it’s beautiful people is a hard choice to do. Thank you for this awesome 2 years. I’ll always remember all the things i’ve learnt from you, mas beng, kak yudith, putri, and each person in this place.

You have travelled to many places, learned from many people, and in the end you found you own happiness with RAW and your love of your life, kak yudith . And my time is coming to take another journey like you’ve done before in order to learn life one step further.

Thank you for being such an inspirational boss and heartwarming person. Wish you and your family all the best thing in life could offer.

Regards,

Raras.

God Bless you.

6 Desember 2013 Buku Houses by indonesian Architect sudah terbit.

“The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.”

wherever you go, go with all your heart. Confucius

25 September 2013 Today is my second marriage anniversary with my lovely wife, Laurensia.

5 September 2013 I just came back from working trip to Belitung. I worked one resort here, The building is fantastic, the owner, the builders has pushed the limit of the construction difficulties. I was thinking that  I’m just a musical player who played with instruments of nature. I hear the voice of the nature, the beauty of construction here gathered by local labour. The resort complex was aimed to finish on this December. 2 September 2013 I just came back from Jogjakarta, city with spirit of java. I met old friend from Palembang who studied on Urban Design, Rizka Drastiani, I asked her to show me, Kali Code’s development, an urban development and bits of architecture piece by Romo Mangunwijaya. Screen shot 2013-11-21 at 9.54.20 PM 1 September 2013 I met few students at UNS, sharing about architecture. 30 August 2013 I’m going to Solo for UPH’s student workshop of PA 3. The workshop is placed at rumah rempah, which is a workshop owned by Paulus Mintarga 26 August 2013  12 August 2013 I’m flying to Singapore tomorrow. 8 August 2013 Happy Lid to all my brother, sister, hope you all have great time in this public holiday. I’m so happy with this break, because I can relax and enjoy the holiday for 2 weeks with my family. I gave my staffs few days off, they have worked very hard for me, it’s worth to enjoy life at least once a year. By the way I’m not going anywhere, I am staying in my lovely house, spending time with my family. I might plan for next holiday trip. I have two options in my mind, I was thinking to go to Bangladesh to see my lovely friend, Omar. I have another promise to fullfil to this person, I think I’m bad at fulfilling my promise. Another one, I might go to Singapore, for short trip. I’m planning to see what’s my friends are up to. Hopefully they are doing great ! 7 August 2013 I met  Ditri, new reporter who got my number from Sunthy. She asked how do you know Sunthy, I was wondering, I don’t know either, the thing that I know, we still connected in our own way. We discussed much in Slipi few months ago. Ditri is interesting person, she is landscape designer who loves to write. She has her own story about connecting the network of in her view, connecting people by what they can do with what they have for the society. It will be in her new magazine. I remember what she said at the end, “Realrich, Honesty in good deed can be seen by looking at the people eyes.” and the, I smile with that phrase from her.  It ends our chat in one coffee corner at Plaza Senayan, afterwards I went back to watch movie with Laurensia. Nice to meet you Ditri. 6 August 2013 I was wondering while I was walking in my neighborhood, there are several renovation of old buildings, new buildings which make me contemplated about my practice, about how far should I go to determine one form to another form, how far should I challenge the brief. Starting from building philosophy is always my favorite intention. I don’t quite like what happens in my neighborhood. It’s  not questioning about what the function and form should be. They called their style minimalistic, from my opinion, it’s not what Mies intends to, or Pawson, or Ando, which they try to expose themselves to such philosophy, a philosophy of living less, minimalistic, or silence in spirituality, feeling to get enough. Then my eyes, my head wonder about the tiny bit, about the gutter that is not planned within, about the leaking which might happens, about the cracking in joint between concrete and brick exposed by sunlight which might be a problem of leaking tested by time. I just feel it isn’t right way to do architecture here they are heading to. It’s about thick lipstick sometimes misinterpretation, another generalization about minimalist architecture, it’s never about form, it’s about philosophy. 4 July 2013 Contemplating about the core of architecture movement, I love what Robert Venturi believes. In the 1966, there is publication under the title “Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture” he stated :

Architects can no longer afford to be intimidated by the puritanically moral language of the orthodox. Modern Architecture. I like lements which are hybrid rather than “pure”, compromising rather than “clean,” distorted rather than “straightforward,” ambiguous rather “articulated” perverse as well as impersonal, boring as well as “interesting,” conventional rather than “designed,” accommodating rather than excluding redundant rather than simple, vestigial as well as innovating, inconsistent and equivocal rather than direct and clear. I am for messy vitality over obvious unity. I include the non sequitur and proclaim the duality.

This believe is wonderful, opposed to Corbusier’s rational believes, which It expressed by some of his buildings. The article that he wrote, about a man with a donkey thought should explains this contradiction very well. 1 August 2013 I met my great uncle, he was the one who encourage me to open the firm. He hired me as well to design his own building, his office and his house. He said “Design building for me, a building which I could admire, live in, work in, and it should be actually works as I live with my activity within.” I love nature, I was thinking to use some of the metaphors for this design. I remember about Alvar Aalto a man who embraced modernism early in his career then moved on to develop a personal idiom.Idiom that acknowledged modern culture and technology but remained firmly grounded in the Nordic context. He has designed wonderful sanatorium, furniture, which reflects the form of nature which is organic. 17 June 2013 Today I’m very tired of finding new place for our small workshop. I kept looking for these few days from one to another place. Laurensia and me went to river side of Daan Mogot, place where stock piles of garbage dumped there. We found one place of storage for workshop there. But there are problems such as flooding, smell, but the space is spacious. I’m also looking for one house for my driver, he has a dream for having his own place of living, a small, but decent one. I found a small piece of land, only 80 sqm, gladly he like it. The thesis then come in my head about the affordable house for every people especially, which is cost less but very decent one. Vo Trong Nghia has tried designing low cost house, but I think the passive design is not addressed perfectly, It’s still hot during the day time which show the temperature is quite high even though he is using bamboos louver as sun shading. 8 June 2013 I remember one day that was bitter like Gibran’s symphony,

Kamboja tree at Bali – “Nature in Harmony”

“Only yesterday I was no different than them, yet I was saved. I am explaining to you the way of life of a people who say every sort of wicked thing about me because I sacrificed their friendship to gain my own soul. I left the dark paths of their duplicity and turned my eyes toward the light where there is salvation, truth, and justice. They have exiled me now from their society, yet I am content. Mankind only exiles the one whose large spirit rebels against injustice and tyranny. He who does not prefer exile to servility is not free in the true and necessary sense of freedom.” Kahlil Gibran

Traditional House at Tenganan

I raised concern in our life, our man made culture. That sometime we see the opportunity as wild, to maximize the profit of each moment. I wonder then, what purpose of life then ? If we can’t share our life to the one who needs it.  I believe, each day will pass by, and the kindness of everyday life in wherever you are should be seen as kindness serendipity. By the way  I just came back from overseeing work at Kerobokan, Bali. I can see why we say Bali as Island of God. It’s kindness, the architecture marvels to respect nature, man live under nature. While the people probably try to respect nature as its best with it’s people. The irrigation system might show us example of its living system.

“Subak is a traditional ecologically sustainable irrigation system that binds Balinese agrarian society together within the village’s Bale Banjar community center and Balinese temples. The water managements is under the authority of the priests in water temples without forget about Tri Hita Karana Phylosophy which is relationship between humans the earth and the gods; an ancient method followed in India by rishi’s of Hindu Religion in India.” wiki

I also visited Tirta Gangga, such a wonderful landscape beauty because of it’s natural water flow, its ambiance of tranquility, we can sense such spirituality which connect from our heart to nature. The brief history said that this one hectare complex was built in 1946 by the late king of Karangsem. There are many beautiful statues, carvings, path walk, fountain. ” Tirta Gangga literally means water from the Ganges and it is a site of some reverence for the Hindu Balinese. Strictly, the name refers to the water palace built here in 1948 by the Raja of Karangasem, Anak Agung Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem. It is, however, widely used to refer to the general area which includes the water palace and the lush rural areas around.” Wiki.

I felt the coldness of the water, the freshness that it brings. Its one way to respect our nature. I think this journey to east of Bali is worth to bring such spirituality to our mind heart and body.

3 June 2013 I heard Raras’s father got heart attack, hope and pray the best for her father :(. That what I affraid might happen to my parent as well. We as human being connected by love with our parent and family. The good news is I heard that her father is recovering. :) 22 May 2013 I’m off today from office, spending time with my wife. The best wife in the world. I remember Robin Sharma wrote that most people don’t discover what’s most important in life until they are too old to do anything about it. They spend many of their best years pursuing things that matter little in the end. While society invites us to fill our lives with material objects, the best part of us knows that the more basic pleasures are the ones that enrich and sustain us. I believe that no matter how easy or hard our current conditions, we all have a wealth of simple blessings around us. As we do, our happiness grows. Our gratitude expands. And each day becomes a breathtaking gift. 21 May 2013 Tomorrow my wife is having birthday :). I can’t wait to spend my time with her. So I will be off tomorrow. 17 May 2013 Today is saturday, I went  to Bidadari Island with some of the students for sharing experience. #1 It was sharing about my life experience in uni, my working experience, moment of learning, toughness of working time of 3500 hours per year when I worked with past colleagues working for Norman Foster, Wu Tzu Chiang, and Mas Emil, and other prominent mentors. This experience I must say, was very important experience to shape my way of thinking in my practice now. It is all about knowledge development, but despite that thing, secondly,I shared about the relationship between people to people, encouragement, good relationship which I mean real relationship, take and give to be true family with everyone even with stranger. The third thing is, I shared about the person that we have to face turbulent times, depends on, In my case, that person is my lovely wife. She came with me to the talk and everywhere I go. In this life there is always be turbulent times, thousand of times of sadness and happiness, be prepared, and enjoy your time ya :) Tuhan terima kasih atas hari ini, semoga minggu depan, hidup akan semakin baik untuk dijalani, penuh suka cita. :)

16 May 2013 I fixed my lovely bicycle in local workshop. He has a name, his name is Seagram, not Seagull. :) I used it when I was in Uni, 10 years ago.

“Life is like riding a bicycle: you don’t fall off unless you stop pedaling.” – Claude Pepper

… 13 May 2013 Evan, my student, reminded me about talk at Bidadari. I look forward for the event on 18th to 20th May, 12 May 2013 I was thinking about the design of the cities, I think there are 3 main typical functions of urban spaces, network, square, and core. One masterplan is a way to organise to enhance a good behavior for its people with different culture, climate setting. To create one masterplan we need to understand theory, history, philosophy, culture, environment, aesthetics, typologies while  exclude one item which is politics. One book by Alexander Cuthbert, Designing Cities, should explain all of these item with writing from, Manuel Castells, Christian Norberg-Schulz, Peter Newman, Jon Lang, Aldo Rossi, etc 11 May 2013 I’m doing  landscape design for my brother and sister’s house, my mother’s house. To learn about art of gardening, I was thinking to learn from the best gardeners and nursery centre, eventhough my aunt taught me about lot of things, the functionality of shrubs and trees. Asihara, Ching also wrote several well thoughtfull books about art of gardening, landscaping. 9 May 2013 Last week, my former colleague, Scott Valentine came to Jakarta, It’s been 8 years, I haven’t seen him, he is working with WATG, one prominent hospitality architecture firm. Hopefully he was happy during the trip. He had seen my working space, meeting with my staffs inside the workshop place where I did experiment in Architecture, and I invited him to see our workshop, place where I tried to get sense of perfection done in such limited resources.

Scott ““This is the office” I’m told, “now look up – and back there”  My first shock is how many people they have packed into a tiny space, then I look up, I look behind me. there’s people everywhere!  A single long desk space packed with computers, workers and files adorns the side wall.  Then above another level of staff.  12 staff in a 10m x 3m room!” here is his story, you can click this link . My Seat – Light up

… 8 May 2013  Our way is not soft grass, it’s a mountain path with lots of rocks. But it goes  upwards, forward, toward the sun. Ruth Westheimer, b. 1928 I believe that we do not move through our days alone or apart from the world around us. And so we must always be aware of the things and the people we allow into our live. I think It’s a mark of wisdom, tons of blessings to choose to spend time in those places that inspire and energize you and associate with those people who elevate and uplift you. Whether in our work or within our personal lives, these most positive friends and peers will inspire us to be our greatest selves and to lead our largest lives. 7 May 2013 Dear God, thank you for your kindness to my family, my friends, and me. Hope you will always be with us, to show compassion, love, and sincerity. Give us strength, and let my loved people see this as a love message to show your love. Thank you so much. 1 May 2013 I was thinking to continue the renovation my driver’s house. I was thinking to use all of the recycle material, the left over small pieces marble as wall and floor. Bu the composition of the planes should be very clear composition bringing sense of privacy and functionality of wall as building structure, because the space is quite limited and the structure used is existing structure. 21 April 2013 Dear my loved one, I would like to say, Thank you for your love, precious passion you have been giving to our family. This society has become a messy place to be. People value their things more than they value their relationships. We seem to be more interested in stroking our egos than in the much richer pursuit of reaching our ideals. It’s just so sad, it’s become more popular to be popular than to be ethical, brave, and kind. I’m so happy and showing honor having you in my life. I hope that we can life our life freatly, my wife. Dream boldly. Live beautifully. And to our last breath, Love to the fullest. 16 April 2013 2 days ago i went to Bandung for visitting two architects, seeing their works on their house, Pak Apep and Mas Deddy, I was very happy because of their response and willingness to share their work to me and my students of Thinking Drawing Class. 7 April 2013 I remember one house that is on the hill that I always think of, I made a model from cardboard for contemplating the composition. It’s made from composition of planes. One house that I love is Falling water (1935-9). Arguably Wright’s masterpiece, achieves such a unity with landscape, its forest and hill. Its tiered horizontal concrete slabs dramatically cantilevered over a waterfall – at one an abstraction of its setting and an integral part of it. It is also showed in wright other’s work, Taliesin was built from local stone combined with concrete made out of local aggregate, so the structure appeared to grow out of its rocky desert setting. 6 April 2013 I remember, my first date with Laurensia. She is the my love one, time flies so fast, it’s been 5 years now. hugs ! :)

30 March 2013,

“Among his various possible beings each man always finds one which is his genuine and authentic being. The voice which calls him to that authentic being is what we call”vocation.” But the majority of men devote themeselves to silencing that voice of the vocation and refusing to hear it. They manage to make a noise within themselves…to distract their own attention in order not to hear it; and they defraud themselves bysubtituting for their genuine selves a false course of life.” Jose Ortega Gasset

I spent my time today with my wife, so happy for our moment together :) 29 March 2013 Yesterday, Laurensia, my family, and me went for mass to celebrate Holy Thursday. In this mass, there is Pedilavium (washing of the feet), traces of which are found in the most ancient

rites. We learn that Jesus washed our feet with his hand, so we have to wash other’s feet by our hand. It’s showing true compassion to help, serve each other. I met one person he is looking for job. I was thinking to open door for him, his eyes showing a sincerely, a way of showing respect for others.  I want to look after more people as much as me and Laurensia can. By doing that this world should be one better place, at least in our world.

28 March 2013 I was wondering about the relationship between object and its relationship in architecture. The object itself in the need to connect to the outside world, therefore context comes in. That’s why architecture and outside world is somehow connected, bringing outside in whatever it is, the surrounding, the nature is very important. I think Shigeru Uchida agreed with me, he wrote

“there are two directions for design themes,. They are the way to grasp a “thing” or “object” as a subject and the way to consider a “relationship as precedent.” … a major theme is how to create a relationship between each of these things that has its own individual meaning. Moreover, on top of these relationships, each of their parts also comes into existence.

House at Tulodong
Sketch for Jong’s House

The challenge in architecture is the relationship to what ? the relationship itself is a predicate not a subject, it’s a process on connecting the tissue of each part which is solving the problem and creating wonderful design. 27 March 2013 I’m thinking about the new bioclimatic form about roofs. The roof is one of the most beautiful part of architecture, it’s a crown, resembling human attributes. It’s the head. The question, how can you design new touch about it. What is new then, according to its beauty, function, logical structural question. Can it be lighter ? Roofs are the building element that are subject to greatest changes in temperature, and therefore the greatest expansion and contraction. Different types of roofs were thus created, with different thicknesses and materials according to the characteristics of each place. The construction aspect of roofs is undoubtedly significant for their design and maintenance.  A roof is considered to be flat when the pitch is no more than 5 %. A roof with a pitch of 5 – 15 % is considered a low pitch roof, and one with a pitch higher that 15% is considered to be a pitched roof, I think the choice of one type of roof or another depends fundamentally on the communication between architect and client, on answering the client’s needs and foreseen the innovation in the roof design technology. It’s added by carlos broto that it’s depends also to the climatic conditions and on resources available. It must be conceived constructively, rationalised and adapted to the variable conditions of its environment. 26 March 2013 Today I met my old friend, he is now working in a prestigious company in Indonesia. It’s very unpredictable to meet him again, I was thinking about the click moment, Frans Johansson, said :

“”The world has never behaved in a predictable fashion, and that has never been truer than it is today. But this means that anyone of us has the opportunity to change world in the most unexpected of ways.An opportunity can present itself in the blink of an eye. It can happen when you least expect it. It can hapen in an instant , when the various pathways of our lives come together in surprising ways and connect.”

I never expect to meet him to talk about many opportunities, but that’s click moment, always surprises us. It’s happened to you as well, :) it’s about opportunity to getting know each other. 24 March 2013 I remember my daughter, Cherry, I feel so sad :(

23th March 2013 I’m so Gratefull today, many good things happened :) Right now I’m thinking about one school of construction mastery, It’s one school I named, “Design Perfection Workshop”. It’s one place to train skill for new apprentice in stone masonry, blacksmith, and carpentry. This school allows us to train the craftsmanship. The intention is to find new way of construction, of perfecting the old one, both of them are needed. I’ve got my intention, there are two spots needs to be perfected one is the improvement of understanding art in architecture, and construction in architecture. Both of them accumulates to be one master piece of architecture. That’s why I was thinking what we could do for striving such mastery.

Spending Time with Fadi and Gamma

16th March 2013 Finaly I met Fadi Raditya and Gamma Sinta Rini during our trip to Bandung, Fadi and Gamma have established their own architecture firm titled farad studio. hope the best for them. 13th March 2013 I’m at Pontianak, it’s about one masterplan nearby Ambawang River. I was thinking that this project needs to be green in landscape, full of park where old and young meet up. The street is going to be great !, I was thinking the ROW doesn’t need to be 12 m, but it can be smaller, 8 m is sufficient with no gate. In design of the masterplan, the framework is very important. It’s about combining the whole thinking of beauty of the nature and uniqueness of each typology, understanding the commercial force is also important factor. 12th March 2013 I was thinking in the office, I put all of my energy to understand force of nature, and brought it to the architecture scheme. The architecture scheme needs to say it’s a damn good design, depends on each circumstances. I want it to be extremely meaningfull. Each project has each story.

10 th March2013 I read one book “New Regionalism in Bali Architecture by Popo Danes published by IMAJI Publishings, in overall I love this book not only because of many breathtaking and beautiful pictures but it shows a clarity in showing plan, elevation and section. The description in the project, explained very well although it can be more detailed. It’s started briefly from what client asked Popo Danes in brief and what His intention in answering the brief. I like Popo Danes, his lovable gesture of what I called synthesis of neo traditional movement is evolving so we can look at the picture, many details resemble traditional usage of material, joining technique. I can say he is one great empirist ! :) I would love to see him in person

6th March 2013 Akanaka is nearly finished. I’m expecting all the things about design is on place. I was thinking about this project which has rational of  functionality, the communal space arrangement, the lightwell between rooms, and the exercise of aesthetic and economical aspect of detail design.

20 th February 2013, My mom is having birthday today. I pray for her health and happiness. She has been sick for several days, few days ago my family and me taking her to emergency room because of her fever. I hope she will recover as soon as possible. I’m designing several houses now, I think every houses need not to be same, there are such principles, but it will always better than before, also the detail. In our act, excellence is not an act but a habit. Keep the spirit ya ;) Architecture is a lifelong commitment The principles of workmanship to unifiy art and architecture came from very long time ago. It’s the need of perfection of architecture mastery. It was found by one of my mentor, Walter Gropius. He is Well known because of his rationality in the design during form follow function movement. In 1913, Gropius published an article about “The Development of Industrial Buildings,” which included about a dozen photographs of factories and grain elevators in North America. A very influential text, this article had a strong influence on other European modernists, including Le Corbusier and Erich Mendelsohn, both of whom reprinted Gropius’s grain elevator pictures between 1920 and 1930. [Wikipedia]

The Bauhaus school was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. In spite of its name, and the fact that its founder was an architect; the Bauhaus did not have an architecture department during the first years of its existence. Nonetheless it was founded with the idea of creating a “total” work of art in which all arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style became one of the most influential currents in Modernist architecture and modern design.[1] The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography. My thought for Akanaka Logo [simple, crisp, beautiful]
19th February 2013, Lobang Kayu, one of our project will be on Archinesia next edition, thank you IAAW for such publication. Also I designed this logo for one of design built. I love for the simplicity, but we need to add more options to see where it might go. I need to send this to Denny and Edhie, to get their approval for the design.

18th February 2013, I really love to use concrete. I love the texture of the material, the simplicity, boldness and heaviness of the original fingerprints that it brought. The character is different than steel, It’s heavy. The challenges is always how to enlighten this kind of material. Ando Tadao has been developing the mastery of the concrete with the general contractor to get the surface smooth and done in such panel integrated with the structure itself. Today I spent several hours at Oemah Demang, I need to do last add for lighting design and several transition details from bare concrete, gutter, L steel, and coral. I think that the details make the architecture function as a whole.

17th February 2013, Today is Sunday, Laurensia and me enjoy Bandung so much. I spent quite a while to plant pine trees along the edge at the home for cherry. We talk to the local workers, village people to help us taking care of the baby trees. Hear the voices of the nature

“There is always Music amongst the trees in the Garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it.”

me and laurensia seeing the trees

Minnie Aumonier 16th February 2013, I woke up very early in the morning, . I remember that today Laurensia and me will have our time in Bandung, such lovely city. Before we go I need to go to Kemang Timur for supervise Oemah Demang design. I was wondering about the lighting of this home. I think the best place to find lighting fixture is in Bandung, it’s not expensive, and the design is good. So I made a preparation to set up several points for outdoor lighting on site with workers.

13th February 2013, I got interviewed by Dwell design, thanks to tya, and mbak Sunthy for the hospitality. It’s about Bare minimalist design for Charles Wiriawan. We invented wind chimney, cross air circulation, and sunshade fixtures together with combined by lightness of the concrete and living canopy to soften it’s expression. I called this paradigm, Bioclimatic Design. I think it’s about innovation of understanding climate in architecture. It’s holistic approach to design. I remember Alexandros N. Tombazis wrote

“…You should approach design in a holistic way, drawing strength and inspiration from all the elements of which it is composed, for example: history, culture, social considerations, symbolism, beauty, function, technique, place, sustanaibility and energy considerations, climate. the law of physics and time-cost benefit…  do not frown on these issues. They all count and are important, of course not always to the same degree in all projects. On the other hand though, and this is the difficult part of it, if you take everything into consideration but lack that extra flair, the end result will probably not be much than mediocre, a watered – downsoup.”

I think to decide which one is more important that other, we need to sense it. Each project is definitely unique, and we need design of architect’s eyes to bring the brilliant scheme.

10th February 2013, I just back from Belitung doing site supervise Arum Dalu resort. several Villa detail design is done on spot. Today is Chinese New Year. I got package from Surya, celebration card and photo journal. I hope the best for him for his career. I’m really happy to see all of my staffs going forward and do their best. 8 th February 2013, I did several on spot design. The Arum dalu starting to have its own beauty. I believe this resort will be one world class resort with the passion of the owner, the beauty of the nature, and the architecture that inspire and enhance the beauty of it. I was thinking that the detail need to be function, timeless, and aesthetically beauty. I did survery with people, we found kaolin coral which has spark and translucency like onyx but it’s beautiful, rare in pure white colour. I was thinking to have special custom shower fixture designed, it’s using pvc pipe covered with 80 mm blanger plank.

Ship cotter pin

7 th February 2013, I look at the ship construction in Belitung, how the joint unified using traditional wood cotter pin. They also can bend the wood using warmth of fire. It’s one of the local traditional carpentry. I was thinking about bent wood, and remember my master alvar aalto do the same thing but it’s in the different way for his furniture design. arm chair 406 in 1939. Check this. 5th February 2013, Encouragement. One word that makes human stronger. I find this word hard to swallow in this world today. It’s really important to put trust on whoever help you regarding to everything. I’m planning to do last revision Oemah Demang Design revised done in today. It’s about the lightness of hand railing, the honesty of its construction and its efficiency to reduce building cost. I was thinking that stainless steel fitting that allowing 3 cm gab might do better than putting the panel directly to steel stick.

1st February 2013 It’s already new month. I’m very happy to see my wife recovered from our loss. Yesterday I did lecture for Architecture department of University Indonesia. I shared one butterfly collection, from my side of view to make our fantasy come true in architecture. There are several components, thoughts needed such as context, creativity, initiatives, and trust. Creativity is basically trying to solve problem with new paradigm, fresh look with one full learning design iteration. It’s never ending qualitative process. Fantasy is all about people. It’s one enterprise that brings people together around some marvelous dream that inspires people and contribute rich value to those they serve. With all the technology, disruption, competition in the world today, a lot of us have forgotten that the whole game is about relationships – and human connections plus context plus initiatives.

31 January 2013 It’s the end of the month. Today, I will be pretty busy, I’m planning to go on site for site inspection, together with UPH’s thinking working drawing class, meanwhile in the afternoon I will do lecture for University Indonesia students. I just can’t wait for the lecture. Meanwhile I remember today is Saturday, time for relax and have fun with family. 30 January 2013 It’s 5.30 am in the morning. I’ve got wonderful quote from Lao Tzu, it’s about how to carve our mastery and passion.

The master of art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play. His labor and his leisurer, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. he simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others ti decide whether he is working or playing. To him, he is always doing both. Lao Tzu

The wisdom of this reflected in the observation that hard work plays huge part in making you successful. And, the truth is, we simply tend to work harder at things we’re passionate about. Today I have trip for our upcoming project, It’s eco boutique hotel. Many people ask what is eco project. The simple one coined started by professor from Harvard, Ian Mcharg, in his book “Design with Nature”,

he popularized a system of analyzing the layers of a site in order to compile a complete understanding of the qualitative attributes of a place. McHarg gave every qualitative aspect of the site a layer, such as the history, hydrology, topography, vegetation, etc. This system became the foundation of today’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a ubiquitous tool used in the practice of ecological landscape design. [wiki]

I think this approach need to respond to passive , active, several analysis needed. The idea is to conclude harmony man with nature. I call this building bioclimatic building. 28 January 2013 Today is Monday. It’s 5 a.m. It’s the starting of the week. I will do lecture coming Saturday about architecture theme – reviving the dead at University of Indonesia. consider its definition

re·vive (r-vv)

v.re·vived, re·viv·ing, re·vives

v.tr.

1. To bring back to life or consciousness; resuscitate.
2. To impart new health, vigor, or spirit to.
3. To restore to use, currency, activity, or notice.
4. To restore the validity or effectiveness of.
5. To renew in the mind; recall.
6. To present (an old play, for example) again.

v.intr.

1. To return to life or consciousness.
2. To regain health, vigor, or good spirits.
3. To return to use, currency, or notice.
4. To return to validity, effectiveness, or operative condition.

To return death to life, a condition before. If the site is blank canvas then how to bring it back to life. Actually it’s basic need of what every scheme needs, it’s the duty of the architect when human and nature at its centre. The combination of both is needed, human and nature. To think about this we need to think critical about the context, about the city, about the action to bring back the spirit of environment [genius loci]. It’s all about good architecture and it needs to be responsive. 26 January 2013 It’s 4.30 am in the morning. I’m still refining few projects so far, I’m doing I walk for Citraland. For the few days workshop, I still don’t get the form that I want, my staffs in the office have been working hard for this, now it is my turn. I get this wonderful quote from Martin Luther King Jr. about the job that we do every that whatever our position is. He said

If a man is called to be street sweeper, he should sweep streets as Michaelangelo painted or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare poetry. He sould sweep streets so well that all hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say “Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

Nevertheless Because today is Saturday, I will have time with my family. :) 25 January 2013 Laurensia is recovering from the surgery, thank you for Dr. Cindy. We lost our baby, 2 months. I just hope Laurensia recover like normal quickly and we can have our time together. My tears dropped, I am very sad, but life must go on, we have to walk this life again, with what we have, living life that matters. 20 January 2013 it’s 6.a.m in the morning. Today is Sunday. Deep inside my heart cries of the news.

19 January 2013 I hope the sadness in our family because of the pain of the losing our hope does not happen. I remember story from Tuesday with Moorie, He said, when sadness happened, feel it greatly, deep inside your heart, dive with it, and then get over it. It’s done.

18 January 2013 my office is closed today. I spent time by reading books, one book is about the story of my most favorite American architect, Frank Lloyd by Bruce brooks, and it’s about the finding of prairie house. He wrote in the March 1908 issue of architectural record,

“The prairie has a beauty of its own and we should recognize and accentuate this natural beauty, its quiet level. Hence, gentle sloping roofs, low proportions, quiet skylines, suppressed heavyset chimneys, and sheltering overhangs, low terraces and out reaching walls sequestering private gardens.

Designing one house in every part of the world is unique by its context. In Indonesia, we are known for its monsoon climate, we need to accommodate air stacking effect and cross air ventilation to add fresh air which accumulate in such humid climate that we have. I think it takes time to evolve to redefine. Wright takes 7 years to redefine and invent his planning. I learn about open plan, the need of creating series of activity in house design, place where people see each other, talk with each other, because of the culture of the people, Asian culture. But William Morris has done in his design, red house. So, what could we offer, I believe in fantasy, in one dream, that house need to be warm, expressed by its beauty of unpredictable forces such as each context, and its client. In order to get inspiration, ask nature what it offers, by its impression and its character. We hear the sound, breath fresh air, and the imagination will come after. And I’m also reading another book by Frans Johansson aout the click moment. I will share the click moment in the next post ya :). I hope the flooding is over soon, and Jakarta will be normal.

17 January 2013 The city of Jakarta get flooded badly, I think the government should consider the development of the infrastructure. I think there are many best practice to follow from Tokyo, London, Denmark, Rome about the importance of the quality of living. Every people should read jane jacobs, Lang about theory of great city. I agree with what Jacobs wrote,

It is so easy to blame the decay of cities on traffic … or imigrants… or the whimsies of the middle class. The decay of cities goes deeper and is more complicated. It goes right down to what we think we want, and to our ignorance about how cities work. The forms in which money is used for city building – or with held from use – are powerful instruments of city decline today. The forms in which money is used must be converted to instruments of regeneration – from instruments buying violent cataclysms to instruments buying continual, gradual, complex, and gentler change.

My Birthday
My Dream Team

16 January 2013 I am 31 years old today :) Jakarta is flooded today. My employees did surprise, I’m so amazed, so we had a photo session at the front of our office. I do believe the office has best camaraderie that we have cultivate the relationship so far, it can’t be measured by looking at it, but it spread among us. The flooding is getting better, Laurensia and me went to nearby shopping mall to buy a celebration ice cream for my birthday. I’m so gratefull with this life, air that we breath, family that I love so much, and friends who are beside us in matter of sadness and happiness.

Life is a song – sing it. Life is a game – play it. Life is a challenge – meet it. Life is a dream – realize it. Life is a sacrifice – offer it. Life is love – enjoy it. Sai Baba

Thank you God, Thank you my wife, thank you my family, thank you friends, thank you life for everything.

Birthday with My Wife

15 January 2013 I’m refining design for cluster of townhouse at Margasatwa, the idea come up to get a concept of sustainable living, which mean dan we need to rethink about the opening, the planning configuration while the bussiness model need to be considered as well, because many sustainable scheme does not go forward because the treatment is considerably expensive.

14 January 2013 I just came back from Makassar, finding that Jakarta is in Heavy rain, hopefully the city is not flooded this time.

13 January 2013 It’s sunday, I’m going to Makassar for one eco resort, one friend asked me to help him to do his project. I was thinking to meet old friend at Makassar, she moved to Makassar few years ago, I can’t wait to hear her story. My Father is having his birthday today, I pray for his health and happiness.

9 January 2013 Love … it surrounds every being and extends slowly to embrace all that shall be, Khalil Gibran. It’s 4.30 am in the morning, I will go to Oemah Demang just make sure all of the design set up in place.

8 January It’s serene and tranquil today. I remember about Black Swan, Yevghenia, she spent few years, writing her book without comprimising to the outer world, it’s a path of perfection. In order to get perfection we need to set back from our daily routines, and ask ourself, what’s worth, what’s needed, it’s a point of redefining premise of understanding other people, our surrounding. That’s a perfection of what I think worth for. 7 January It’s 5 a.m. in the morning,

One key to success is to have lunch at the time of day most peoplehave breakfast. ~Robert Braul

today I will wrap design one house at valley for our client at Bandung, and another one in Alam Sutera. I have to make the dream crystalized.

House in its definition from merriam webster dictionary is a building that serves as living quarters for one or a few families

but I think it’s more than that definition above, I remember that in house design, Gaston Bachelard’s La Poetiques de l’espace (‘The poetics of Space; 1958) explores the psyhic nature of the house, from the attic where though are kept corresponding to the superego, to the basement where things are buried and forgotten. Houses house not only poeple and their belongings, they also contain memory and meaning. It’s deep in its philosophy and design concept.

6 January It’s 5 a.m. in the morning, I’m still refining lobby and gazebo for Arum Dalu till the precise detail and composition, the result before was still not in my expectation eventhough I know we have done our very best last week. In order to be the best, I think it’s the price of the process, the testing gets under way. I will do this until 7 a.m. and will start travel this universe of life with my wife, the best wife in the world. :) And you people don’t forget to relax ya, today is Sunday. I will pray for such blessing, and gratefullness to God for what’s good and bad been happening :)

5 January Heard about the smart tunnel proposed by Jokowi and Ahok, Very gratefull to hear it because it’s vital point to manage waste in the city, even though London needed four decade at least to build the tunnel, it’s no point to delay it. It’s about creating more healthy city. Heard very sad news about my mentor, my friend about what’s happening in his office. It’s story where corruption happens, and trust, distrust. It shouldn’t be like that, the pure intention is that office is for work, loving our working world, trying to be more capable and more capable and wake up peeps, there is ethics above innovation, and great works :). Please respect others, if we do that , at the end all story is happy ending.

2nd January 2012, I can’t wait for the starting day of daily activities, :) I will have one meeting today, hopefully the meeting will run smooth. I need to make sure the dream of the projects realized. It’s about one ecoresort in Makassar. I met Edhie, Pak Singgih, all of the head builders to coordinate, make sure the design is deliver on spot. it’s part of working the design.

1st January 2012, Happy New Year :) I hope 2013 would be the best year of celebrating the warmth of love, the pursue of happiness to be celebrated with your loved one. I have been reading few books like the leader who had no title by Robin Sharma, It’s wonderfull book, it’s one modern fable who told me about real success in business and in life, it’s also international best seller after Gladwell’s books.

31 December 2012, During my short holiday to Japan, My secretary has prepared all of the gift for my friends and relative, but it’s not enough. 30 December 2012, I can’t wait for the end of the year :) I woke up arround 4.30 a.m. I need to do refinement of work of me and my dream team, it’s about detail of floating stair using cable. It needs to be light and the transition of material to be applied smooth and gentle, and it needs to be sophisticatedly beautifull. I’m writing new article for one architecture magazine. It’s about the timeless way idea of design, one article inspired from Christopher Alexander, James Weirick, and Jon Lang. My wonderfull professor. 1 more day to end of this year.

29 December 2012, I woke up very early this morning, arround 5 a.m. preparing few materials for meeting today at Kemang for Oemah Demang. I was thinking to start a walk arround my neighbourhood for a while, to have such Healthy body is one of our best thing that we ever had, I’ve just turned 30, and will be 31, better enjoy the ride. The time is ticking :). I spent whole day, working on site in Kemang, I need to do refinement on the detail design. This building need to be awesome. I love to work on site, doing the workshop with the builder, it’s not about making the aesthetic, it’s about opening our architect’s eyes, to the detail of the construction, the labour who made it, the beauty of understanding of art making, understanding the logic of the function, and spontanious beauty came up from the numerous workshop. It’s beauty hardwork designed by me and my dream team, along with all the builders and designers inside. I met Laurensia quite late today, because the work today. But when we find ourself tired working, meeting our loved one is always so sweet and memorable just heard love words from her made just enough to close my day.

28 December 2012, The design time is just never stop :) We just get commision from one of our client to design few villas in their projects, also we have one project almost finished in Kemang, my best friend Edhie and Denny, they are the clients. I don’t want to dissapoint them so tommorow I’m going to arrange full meeting with the builder, and project manager on spot just to see one and each detail design to be built correctly and perfectly. This tim I’m adoring the texture of terra cotta for the project. I’m eager to try this material for our project. Meanwhile, we’ve just already finished design for Arum Dalu resort in Belitung, Hope that the client like it. Today, I’m refining the scheme, the design, angle, finishes, and the presentation.

27 December 2012, I just back from our trip to Japan just to relax, it’s ben such wonderfull trip. We met Fitra, Ditto, Renzo [their son] our best friends in Tokyo, while we spent a while in Tokyo, Hakone, Shirakawago, Kyoto. This trip is our baby moon trip,

Babymoon has several meanings. The original meaning is a period of time that parents spend bonding with a recently born baby. More recently the term has come to be used to describe a vacation taken by a couple that is expecting a baby in order to allow the couple to enjoy a final trip together before the many sleepless nights that usually accompany a newborn baby. Babymoons usually take place at a resort that offers appropriate services like prenatal massage.[wikipedia] Babymoon can also be used for a trip taken by a couple even before they get pregnant. As long as the trip is intended to be a final romantic fling before venturing into parenthood, the term babymoon applies.

7 August 2012 I’m very tired now, I still haven’t got any long night sleep. We are having rush dateline to design one 200 ha masterplan, I think the masterplan needs big Gesture for conceptual, i was thinking for the function like circus, one non stop looping main spine with layer of lakeside, commercial, and residential at more private precinct.

6 August 2012 Today is the first day of workshop studio at UPH, I saw students, their freshness on their spirit. Mean while right now is 17.30, i still have several hours before meeting with one contractor to discuss one of the design. I just asked of our staff to send me the drawing. I need to revise some of the design to make more spacious space. Then we are having our office in one cafe, I was thinking, the speed, the time is always so valuable. I hope that I can rest a bit, since this 2 weeks we have been in tough dateline from one project to another projects. Just to share one good news that one of our work “the bare minimalist residence” is in IAI Awards nomination. I’m feeling really happy and thankful for all of the effort we have done, whatever it takes, small effort counts to the project.

4 August 2012 Laurensia and me just come back from Bandung, we went to Melania Kindergarten to help our best friend Denny and Edhie. Fortunately, we have the builder to help construct the design, I will design one swimming pool for this kindergarten to cheer up the students . Bu Sonya as headmaster is a very kind and warm person, she is always smiling. You know what ! coincidentally she is the neighbour of my grand mother and my aunt in Bandung, such coincidence right ! I believe something good will happen to this Kindergarten as the cheerful that happens to the students there

The story is about architect’s world, world might not know what architect world is, it’s dealing with the force of the culture. it’s one components that shapes our culture, best 5 september 2011 last night, me and laurensia met 2 litle boy and 1 little girl, in front of indo mart at puri indah. I felt very sad looking their condition, one boy just ate something from garbage bag. I asked Laurensia to buy three crackers for them, she gave the crackers to them. We felt that we’re very fortunate looking on our surrounding that there are still lot of poor people. I wish we can get really prosperous living for taking care of them. I promise that. 2 September 2011 I’m really busy arranging design for several clients such as Lippo and Ciputra in this still holiday time. September is going to be really busy month. Meanwhile i’m enjoying my new activity of learning how to design website, I’m designing one website for Laurensia, for our marriage. Happy day everybody 30 August 2011 I’m sorting our schedule for honey moon, several musical worth to see. I’m willing to ask Laurensia to see great musical that I have seen before. I would like to see it again, and waiting for her comments after seeing those. We planned to go to less likely 10 cities in UK, still haven’t decided, here is the brainstorm list : 1. musical [probably only 3/4] : lion king, billy elliot, the ghost, probably phantom of the opera [may be not, last time I slept at the show ;)] 2. even older than medieval cities [10 probably is enough] : oxford, cambridge, bath, ediburgh, visit stonehenge, durham, york, manchester, glasgow, land’s end, snowdonian wales.

27 August 2011 It’s holiday. I still remember when we had holiday in sydney, I used to go to beach and swam in cold sea water. It’s priceless. Probably I’ll do that again. so I’m scouting for beach ;), 26 August 2011, we ‘re doing collaboration with lippo land, starting by 6 projects. the pressure is getting tense. People t at Dot workshop are able to answer the brief criticaly sharp, and deliver the very best quality. Meanwhile the collaboration with ciputra and summarecon is on going. Settled few projects already, and time to think sharp and thoughtfull.

21 May 2011 It’s been more than a month this writing has not been updated. the time is just not enough just for writing, but that is not excuse, by having good management of time we could work more efficient with better quality. hmm, probably that’s how we should work. In term of workload, We have got commission from Ciputra, Summarecon which make the office really busy. The time that we spent in office going to be changed a bit. The good news there are 6 students from UPH, Untar, ITB joining us as internship designer, we always love fresh atmosphere. 31 March 2011. Today is the last day of the month, time for us to get salary. All of us need money for living, but it’s not everything.one quote said’ Do your best and money will follow, perform and be thankful because all of the good thing that we have. I just been remembered by Indra and sil that I have to teach kindergarten tomorrow. Gratefully they have prepared the drawing that needs to colour and drawn. They said the topic is nationalism…I passed one family of beggar who collect garbages. They have carriage as their shelter. I feel really sad, we should bring happiness to them, not us but me.

30 March 2011. I grew 2 white hair… Time flies leaving good memory. I just hope that we remember the good and left the bad. Ahh time to sleep, tomorrow is important day for dot workshop because we have simultaneous dateline and there is also final project review in the morning the continued by lecture from morning till evening. Whatever busyness that we have, don’t forget to pray ya.

29 March 201. In My office I  just added small bar, to chill out. Some people asked about having table tennis spot in office. Ahh, the space is not So big, but it’s ok, let’s have small table tennis spot then. 28 March 2011. I just remember one story of roseto in book by malcolm Gladwell, it tells you story bout how the outside world’s rules doesn’t apply to the happy place. I was thinking the same way for my office, place where we work together as architect. Laurensia offered to be a dentist for my staff , what a blessing. Thank you Laurensia :) a good teeth for the my people inside. I just reviewed students of uph final year studio. one people did good job, another did poor job. The good one ussually focus on process, and the poor one jumped to fast to the final production phase. focus on the process, and the result will follow.

27 March 2011. I experienced one unique corridor at Pancoran. A corridor which is quite small, but offers hundred story about struggle of life, mixed of culture, informal quality of life. Ah I just visited old posh chinese food restaurant called san ik at Pancoran, you must come and try this, it’s been here for several years. I still remember when I was 5 – 6 years old, we as one family always came here once a week despite the crowdedness of the street. It’s precious to bring back old memories with some taste. At night laurensia and me ate wonderful pasta and pizza. Whatever that fat counts in, to enjoy life we have to enjoy eating… Splendid.

26 March 2011. I had meeting with one client from Yogyakarta, He used to use Tan Chiang Ai as his architect, Om Tan is my favorite architect, his gesture is timeless in a way of architecture speaks with its best. He asked me whether I could come up with master plan scheme for his land. What a wonderful client I must say inside my heart when I met him. Hopefully, this client can bring my office, a new experience of design. I’m wishing this to be successful.

25 March2011. one client came to our office and asked us to design a house at ancol, the house itself is pretty big, 1000 sqm. With deep breath, I asked the brief from the clients. What does he like, what is preferable. Geomancy is a must in this house, we called it feng shui. not easy to deal with this. The unique thingy is that this client still doesn’t know what they like, so the story would be, we try to recolor their life with pattern of activity. like this space could be this and that. The client’s religion is budhist, they are from Pontianak who has strong Chinese tradition. They wanna have a clean modern but not so extreme style house. We already know that defining style is not easy.  20 March 2011. I started this Butterfly Collection
