At first I was interested in product design studies, because I found deficiency in many of industrial product and their standards. I personally think, most of the products are made without considering human developing needs and activities, especially in urban society.
But living in a big city like Jakarta made me realize the existence of these problems in a bigger scale, I watch how people no longer care about what others need. They tend to think and act individually and become selfish. That’s why we often watch irresponsible attitude in Jakarta. From the smallest matter such as littering in public spaces and waterways, until dwelling in illegal areas (such as waterways and railways) without considering the negative impacts. I believe that actually these problems can be reduced through design.
That motivate me to study more about architecture. Because in Architecture we design an inanimate object, yet still integrated with contexts, (local-global) issue, living things, and (natural, social, and physical) environment. To be compatible with the contexts, there should be a deep research to study the patterns, then these patterns will be the guide in the process of the design. So that when a design is seen as a unity, every form, structure system and material will represent a certain intention related to the context – as a response to the issue – those things have made an architecture value should not be seen only by one point of view.
I know RAW from “learning from master” discussion, held by OMAH. I was amazed how they manage to held such an educational event in between working schedule. Later i figured out RAW is a research-based studio, so to maintain design performances they keep updating, observing, and exploring architecture in many ways. By doing that it will fulfill human developing needs and compatible with their activity. I too agreed with the concept and looking forward to participating in the system, that’s why in this opportunity I want to broaden my knowledge. See through more different point of views.
