Hello! I’m Angel, a fellow learner, and explorer who’s also currently studying architecture at Petra Christian University Surabaya. Was born and raised in Surabaya for 21 years. In my last year as an undergraduate student, I decided to do an internship program in RAW to expand my exploration, and get new experiences as well as new perspectives on architecture and life.
The 24th of November, 2021 is the day RAW offered me a chance to do the internship program which I had applied for 3 months before. I still remember the feeling of waiting and how excited I got when Kak Yudith contacted and offered me the internship program. To be honest, the journey to get to that day wasn’t easy, and I guess that’s what makes that day so special. Through this letter, I would like to express my gratitude to the RAW family, especially Kak Rich and Kak Yudith, for giving me a chance to learn, meet, and work with amazing people in RAW Studio.
These past 4 months, RAW hadn’t only become my workplace but also my home. To work in RAW, I had to leave Surabaya, the place where I grew up and live for 21 years. Surabaya was my comfort zone, but I am glad that I had decided to step out of it, even for only a few months. Within 4 months in RAW, I had learned and gained a lot of knowledge and experiences which gave me a whole new perspective on architecture, the world, and even life. I learned new things that can only be obtained through field experience. I learned that architecture, details, construction, craftsmanship, and communication are inseparable. But, the thing I am most grateful for is that I was never alone. Going through this big change and process of knowing architecture, myself, and life, I was lucky enough to experience it with the best people in the world:) RAW has taught me that architecture is also about being part of a community and family. I believe that creating amazing architecture, also takes amazing teamwork and community.
During my internship, every once in a while, Kak Rich brought up this question “what is our purpose in life?”. This got me thinking, “what do I want in life?”, “where am I heading to?”, “is architecture part of my purpose in life?”. I have been trying to find the answer to these questions, until this one moment. I remember when my mentor had to leave and continue her own journey outside RAW. Kak Rich had mentioned that she had “touched” everyone with her presence and her relationship with others. At that moment, I thought, how beautiful it is? If one is able to touch someone with their presence. That thought made me reflect on myself. I guess for now I decided that my purpose is to be able to touch people with everything that I do, whether through my works in architecture or even through my actions towards others. Therefore, I am also thankful to Kak Rich, for bringing up questions that we were all afraid to ask ourselves.
4 months had passed so quickly. For all the knowledge, experience, wisdom, laughter, and memories, I thank everyone. No words can’t describe how grateful I am to spend the last 4 months in this new home.
Thank You Kak Rich for being such a humble person and for creating a supportive environment in RAW,
Thank You everyone for welcoming me into RAW with a warm smile,
I hope to see you all again!
Best Regards,

Motivation
“I’m very interested and excited to learn about building-user-environmental relationship issues, and I’m aware that this firm is dedicated in the locality on defining architecture in harmony.”
.
Dear Mr. Realrich Sjarief,
Following four years of college at Diponegoro University’s Architecture Department, two months of internship at RAW Architecture in 2020, and participation in numerous architectural competitions and activities, it is clear to me that architecture is not only about building, but also about the social life that surrounds it, which can provide reciprocal relationships. This thought inspired me to
apply for the position of associate architect at RAW Architecture, which is well-known for his locality- based design approach.
When you gave a public lecture at my college in 2018, I was a newcomer to architecture and your words inspired me. You emphasized that using local materials in buildings can provide a much stronger positive relationship with its surrounding environment, which includes social life. Then, in college, I learned about the impact of design failure on social life. For example, the Pruitt Igoe complex in St. Louis, Missouri. There is a mismatch between initial expectations and the reality of its social life impact. The building was then demolished, leaving behind so many of the social issues. This problem
was very intriguing and exciting to me, and it challenges me to improve my ability to solve similar problems in the future.
I am convinced that there is no better place for me to pursue my architectural ambitions than RAW Architecture. I consider it a vibrant experience to have the opportunity to learn more from one of
Indonesia’s best architecture firms that focuses on locality to define architecture. In “Wastu Citra”, Y.B. Mangunwijaya explained that the locality makes human values so meaningful as users of architectural
works. Contextually, locality will increase harmony between buildings, users, and the surrounding environment. As a result, the excellent atmosphere will improve, as will the quality of social life in the
surrounding area. So I believe that working at RAW Architecture will provide me with more insight, bringing me one step closer to my goal of becoming an architect who can help my surroundings live
better lives through my work.
A month ago, my team and I were on the judging panel for a competition, where we were a top five finalist with our conceptual design for a Transit Hub in Surabaya. One of our design concepts is to
spread the intervention regionally, allowing for more social activity to thrive with it. Our jurors, Mr. Andra Matin and Mr. Achmad Noerzaman, told us proudly that we’d created something special. They
stated that as architects, we must base our designs on contextual harmony so that they can provide social value in community culture over time. With this experience, as well as my practice as an intern here,
I am confident that I will be able to contribute to RAW Architecture’s growth as a restless spirit.

Biografi :
saya Sofiana Estiningtyas. May all life’s passing seasons bring the best to you and yours ♡
40th Ulang Tahun kak Realrich
Keep up RAW!!
Hello! My name is Gabriela Marcelina, but everyone usually calls me Gaby. I’m in the seventh semester of my architecture studies at Petra Christian University. I come from Surabaya, and from birth to age 21 always “played” not far from Surabaya. In the middle of 2021, I, who had become interested in architecture, decided to step outside of my comfort zone to explore and learn more about architecture by doing an internship at RAW architecture. Long story short, when I first started studying architecture, I didn’t really understand what architecture was, “What did I learn? What brought me here?”.
Until, finally, in the 3rd semester, I began to gain a better understanding of what architecture is and why architects are needed. I recall it vividly. It was the start of the 3rd semester, and we were given a task to design a multi-mass restaurant. At the time, my thought was, “Well, it’s gonna be fun; I can design a restaurant however I want.” But, over time, throughout the tutoring process, I was taught that it is essential to design a building that is not only of our own volition (the designer) but also one that can “please” its residents or visitors. Later, I was asked by my tutor to do a personal analysis of the human programmatic study, which at that time I did not understand the purposes, “what for? There’s already on Neufert’s book.” Until as time goes by, and when I entered the designing process, I just understood the purpose of my tutor telling me to do programmatic analysis, which helped me realize that I can’t only make visually beautiful buildings. But, it is also necessary to create buildings that can make the residents or visitors feel comfortable and safe by studying their behavior.
Through the knowledge that I got, I am very grateful because it has helped me become a more critical, detailed person who thinks holistically, both in the design process during studio projects in school or in competition, and in daily life. Also through lessons during my studies in school about behavioral, biophilic, and sustainability, I become concerned and interested in people, nature, space, existence, and the future. Since there are many processes that I go through while studying architecture in school, I become more “hungry” for architectural knowledge that occurs in real life. “What does the real-life architecture look like?”. This question has been in my head a lot since I was in school. Therefore, to answer the curiosity that has been suppressed for too long, I finally got up the courage and decided to go through the internship at RAW Architecture.
One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was to apply for an internship at RAW Architecture. I’d like to express my gratitude for giving me the opportunity to join the RAW Architecture family. When it comes to applying to RAW, one of my main goals is to learn. Until, finally, during my internship, what I learned about architecture in RAW far exceeded my expectations. I was very guided in learning about real-life architecture in RAW. Every time I get a new assignment, I am very delighted because every time I completed the task, I gain a lot of insight and knowledge that at first appears to be very unfamiliar to my ear. Every day in the studio, I will definitely hear, understand, and learn new vocabulary about architecture and drawing techniques that I have never known before. Aside from learning about architecture through RAW, I also often get insights about life, which help me to develop and grow into a better person.
Through this testimony, I would also like to thank:
1. Kak Rich is always willing to share his knowledge and insights with others. For example, Kak Rich always gives us much insight about hard skills or soft skill tips related to the studio project every Monday meeting. He also always encourages us to learn writing, and one time he’s willing to teach us about communication skills despite his busy schedule. Also thanks to the presence of Kak Rich, who is always humble and appreciates both the small and big things, the studio environment becomes very friendly, cool, and fun.
2. Kak Timbul, Kak Vivi, Kak Alim, Kak Rico, Kak Riyan, Kak Pandu, Kak Tyo, Kak Haykal, Kak Vyan, Kak Khafid, Kak Mei-Mei, and Kak Fina, who have always been willing to take time out of their busy schedules to teach me about architecture, software, as well as life lessons and many more. Thank you for always sharing with me life insights, always being happy to answer every question that I had about my studies in school when I was confused, always making me laugh with their hilarious jokes, always giving valuable advice, and never making me feel left out.
3. My internship friends, Celine, Neilson, and Kak Ubi, who are always willing to help and teach me whenever I’m unsure and confused about something and are very fun to talk to.
4. The other members of RAW Architecture, are always friendly to me and never make me feel excluded while in RAW.
Lastly, I’m extremely happy and grateful to be a part of the RAW Architecture family. Even though I am currently far away from my family, I feel very happy to have a new family in Jakarta who is willing to accept me, guide me from zero, and always wholeheartedly give me a bunch of knowledge. Surely, all of my experiences and memories in RAW architecture will definitely be remembered fondly in my heart. RAW architecture is indeed the best office ever! ^^
