Heavenrich, selamat datang Surga

Terima kasih Dokter kandungan kami namanya Dr. Raditya Wratsangka.

Inside All 10 Houses From Season 2 of Apple’s Design Docuseries

Guha is in the review in series of Apple Tv.

Cited from website : “The fantastical Indonesia home of Realrich Sjarief is defined from the exterior by its broad circular windows and draping plants, but inside, it’s much harder to define. Gohu means cave, and indeed the concrete structure feels like a place for discovery just like a cave. Age-old materials like bamboo are combined with steel and plastic to create a truly unique, 21st-century building.”

Guha is in Apple TV +

Yesterday we watched a Guha movie on apple Tv, which was filmed by A24 the Apple TV team and edited and worked in a way I never expected. The film is directed by Sami Khan, and produced by dream team : Collin Urcutt, Nick Stern, Courtney Crock, Joe Yaggi, Patrick, Charlie Balsch, Maya Lubis, Lisa Sanusi, David Hutama, Laurensia, Miraclerich, Heaverrich, craftsmen Guha’s team, RAW Architecture studio, Omah and all of the big team in this movie.

We cried every seeing the lost our missing daughter and laughed every seeing Laurensia, Miraclerich and Heavenrich. We never expected the result to touch our heart, it’s gift to Guha.

.

Even they composed special music for the show. I discussed with Cali, to know their creativity to interpret Guha in their own way. “Thank you Realrich! initially we did some extensive research on traditional Indonesian instruments like Gamelan and Angklung and was trying to do a modern twist with them; throughout the creative process we developed quite a lot more than that, mainly drawing inspirations from your concept as an architect actually! The exciting and adventurous spirit to access every doors, blending Western Europe technology but make it work in our situation…; there was one part where you mentioned the process of bending the metal over and over again to make circle shapes (hope I remembered correctly), we found layering the music one by one, over and over (just like the process) works really well with the scene! It grew to be quite philosophical rather than just painting the right colors, if that make sense! And we had a lot of help and guidance from Collin and the team 😊
I hate to explain music too much hahah so really hope you and your family enjoy the music when the episode airs!” This humbled us with such beautiful process comes beautiful piece of music titled “Bamboo Fantasia”.

As an architects, we tried to control, experiment with, and try to fit into balance things. But this movie worked beyond the control as I can’t control of some of the aspect in my life with Laurensia. As a subject, we was prone to be able to open the question in my mind such as how can they touch my heart when we saw this movie? They made us cry and sad in one of the scenes and made me laugh and hold Laurensia’s hand, looking at her happy eyes. This movie is magical and touching with a simple script, but the technical and preparation aspects are not easy.

.
Collin and Nick spent much time discussing and talking about Guha and our family activities. Then, Sami joined as director, and then I felt the questions go more profound than before. Suddenly It touched our weakness which is Losing our daughter. That situation made me shut down my emotion over the years. I never expected that spot hits me hard, and it isn’t easy to talk about it. We cried in the session, we learned that opening myself helps to heal myself.
.
In the next session in the zoom meeting, they met with Laurensia. They needed to meet Laurensia because Laurensia was paranoid about the pandemic, and it was not easy to get Laurensia’s approval. She once said, “honey, this guy is going to make good on you. They have prepared to discuss and make things proper.”
.
She thought that it was only me who would be in the movie, but soon as she understood that her, Miracle, and Heaven were needed on the set, she changed to be a different person that is more open. This moment is a process of us opening ourselves to the fear of pandemic and the fear of us fanning ourselves. One zoom meeting sometimes takes 1-3 hours, and several times were meeting. Then, the day finally came when the Apple TV + team came to Indonesia. Sami, Courtney, and Collin led the team in collaboration with Joe, Patrick, and the team. What interests me is the perfection involved; they need to take the shots several times over and over at a different angle. The heavy tools consist of cranes, drones, lenses, and big cameras. Sami told me that the devices used to take Verite, which means the art or technique of filming something (such as a motion picture) to convey candid realism, and it’s a beautiful shot tested from several angles. Working on something over and over is like craftmanship. It takes enormous energy for one scene to take, but they did hundreds of images in weeks. One time I heard Patrick say,

I remember I cried in the session. I learned that opening myself helps to heal myself.

“Sami, I can’t take it anymore!” I saw Sami, Collin, and Courtney. They focus on the story, logistics, and details because their time to take shots is limited. The camera is heavy for sure.

The next interesting one is spontaneity, they encourage us, me Laurensia, and all of the people on set to be spontaneous like doing our daily activities. Being spontaneous is about showing the back and front stage as it is. It’s an open-up process. There was one line I liked when Laurensia noted that we are connected with gossip in Indonesia when we discussed the city that is so detached.

Spontaneity contested us, to be honest with me, and it helps us appreciate memories with my relation, especially with David Hutama, who interpreted and positioned me. Sami said one time, “Realrich have you heard David saying? Are you getting along with him usually ?” I think I have not met David for such a long time, 3-to 4 years. I remember I met and discussed with David when founding Omah Library.

.
The session of Courtney directing Miracle is memorable, and It’s a Miracle’s favorite. Courtney helps to control Miracle without him even realizing he is on set. He always asked if he would meet aunty Courtney because he explored new things. It’s the same with Laurensia And Heaven, some images were sent to me by a team together as memories, and I genuinely love them because of their smile. I think about them all Of the time. Family is my priority.
.
During the interview, I saw Collin keep writing. One time, Sami asked questions, and Collin reviewed the answer and twisted it to another question for me to answer more clearly. He scrutinized all of the script, dubbing, and technical aspects over and over. They never told me that some of them were the producer, the director, and the scriptwriter. They just worked like a team that had been working for ages. Once, Collin said, “at the end of this release, we are going to be family,” which summarizes my proposition about ideas for answering the questions they prepared. So the situation, ecosystem in the making helps to inspire on site.
.
Then, the day after we went to Alfa Omega school, I felt connected with my childhood when I heard that Lisa spoke, always bringing a vision to help young people. She wanted to get independence from the education system. For young ones, I learned to be as simple as I could. Being honest is an act of humanity. That school is a reminder of how architecture can touch humanity, and we as an architect still have many things to learn.

.
The Apple team traveled quite much, and I saw them quite exhausted. I asked Pak Joe whether this is normal For production to have a very intense camera. He said that it is only beginning. After this, there will be times for editing, and it will take months to finish. Editing takes time. I remember when collin wrote something, my mind came when I wrote the manuscript of architecture as an escape from my daily routines. Literacy for them is crucial to get the sequence in the movie. It’s like an architecture experience based on script: program, material, wisdom.
.
Ultimately, it takes the second trip with bu Maya and Charlie to add more verite video and make the shots even more beautiful. This process made me realize that we need to open myself up in this life. Wherever we are currently struggling, the energy around architects has its S curve, which means there is a steep learning phase associated with short time and intensive training, and then enjoying the learning outcomes until the graph decreases again. The key for a person to continue growing is getting the next S curve from a declining chart. It’s a process to incline up likewise from one angle to another to bring continuous improvement—this improvement leaps the system from the life around architects. In reflecting on that S curve break, there is a moment of celebration of the closeness, personal, and network that makeup life.

This Film made by the production, director and all of the amazing team featured in Apple Tv shows multiple S curves in a short time, and on every upside of the curve, there will be a scene of Miracle smiling and running. That opens up self to treat architecture and its people like a family through tears in heaven. A hope to bring miracles and heaven to others through architecture. Big Thank you to all of you below, you meant so much to my heart and Laurensia as family. Look at the big team below !

Aulia Gema Alfaatihah – Universitas Pradita

Maria Angela Rowa – Universitas Pradita

Mat pagi kak!””, ucapan wajib saya, Maria, memasuki Perpus Omah menyapa umi-umi Omah Library.

Tetaplah bahagia, :) Salam, M.A.R “

Happy birthday my dear, most beautiful wife in the world. laurensia Yudith

Today my wife is having her birthday. Birthday is a big L(love) day of rebirth and reflection on our lives. A soulmate fulfills a purpose in life with kindness, compassion, and love. Thirty-two years ago, when I moved to Jakarta with my family when I was ten years old, we sat at the same benches in the elementary classroom. We have been a usual friend to the best friends since that time. Best friends are never apart, maybe in the distance but never by heart.”

We have been a usual friend to the best friends since that time. Best friends are never apart, maybe in the distance but never by heart.”

I said “I love you” for the first time 14 years ago, and I found my soulmate. When Laurensia agreed to pre-wed in our home, garage office, and neighborhood to stay modest, we learned that this experience brings creativity beyond our limitations. Giving calm and humble life brings more happiness than success with restlessness.
.
Every day, She arranged our family daily life in our family life the pattern so I could have a proper purpose, rest appropriately, and have an excellent work phase. She is the fundamental principle of my life. She can smell when we need to limit our lives, stay safe, and be secured even in Covid.
.
She is the angel, a blessing from God to our family. She is the mother of two cute sons, Miracle and Heaven. They can’t be far from her, and me as well. She hears and speaks softly and touches my heart gently behind all imperfections. Thank you for your love, dear Laurensia. Thank you, God, Who has given us magnificent love, Love You to the Moon, Earth, Pluto, and Nebula.

Motivation

“I’m very interested and excited to learn about building-user-environmental relationship issues, and I’m aware that this firm is dedicated in the locality on defining architecture in harmony.”

.

Dear Mr. Realrich Sjarief,

Following four years of college at Diponegoro University’s Architecture Department, two months of internship at RAW Architecture in 2020, and participation in numerous architectural competitions and activities, it is clear to me that architecture is not only about building, but also about the social life that surrounds it, which can provide reciprocal relationships. This thought inspired me to

apply for the position of associate architect at RAW Architecture, which is well-known for his locality- based design approach.

When you gave a public lecture at my college in 2018, I was a newcomer to architecture and your words inspired me. You emphasized that using local materials in buildings can provide a much stronger positive relationship with its surrounding environment, which includes social life. Then, in college, I learned about the impact of design failure on social life. For example, the Pruitt Igoe complex in St. Louis, Missouri. There is a mismatch between initial expectations and the reality of its social life impact. The building was then demolished, leaving behind so many of the social issues. This problem
was very intriguing and exciting to me, and it challenges me to improve my ability to solve similar problems in the future.

I am convinced that there is no better place for me to pursue my architectural ambitions than RAW Architecture. I consider it a vibrant experience to have the opportunity to learn more from one of
Indonesia’s best architecture firms that focuses on locality to define architecture. In “Wastu Citra”, Y.B. Mangunwijaya explained that the locality makes human values so meaningful as users of architectural
works. Contextually, locality will increase harmony between buildings, users, and the surrounding environment. As a result, the excellent atmosphere will improve, as will the quality of social life in the
surrounding area. So I believe that working at RAW Architecture will provide me with more insight, bringing me one step closer to my goal of becoming an architect who can help my surroundings live
better lives through my work.

A month ago, my team and I were on the judging panel for a competition, where we were a top five finalist with our conceptual design for a Transit Hub in Surabaya. One of our design concepts is to
spread the intervention regionally, allowing for more social activity to thrive with it. Our jurors, Mr. Andra Matin and Mr. Achmad Noerzaman, told us proudly that we’d created something special. They
stated that as architects, we must base our designs on contextual harmony so that they can provide social value in community culture over time. With this experience, as well as my practice as an intern here,

I am confident that I will be able to contribute to RAW Architecture’s growth as a restless spirit.

Biografi :

saya Sofiana Estiningtyas. May all life’s passing seasons bring the best to you and yours ♡

Keep up RAW!!

Kutub kedua sifatnya proyek Komersial, dimana arsitektur terkait dengan cost of investment dan return of investment.

What’s Next After Surviving and Adapting to the New Life ? – IAI Jakarta

Andhi Priatmoko, currently He is director of Ong and Ong Indonesia, and the committee inside IAI (Indonesian Institute of Architects Jakarta Chapter) contacted me to contribute to sharing views about the next design approach after the pandemic. I summarized it into 5 cores which are vernacular, connectivity, design by research, informal economic sector, and materiality.

here is some view about the sharing inside

What’s Next After Surviving and Adapting to the New Life?”

Team - Reflection Letter

Angel Gabriella Kusuma – Universitas Kristen Petra

I’m Angel, a fellow learner and explorer who’s also currently studying architecture in Petra Christian University Surabaya. Was born and raised in Surabaya for 21 years. In my last year as an undergraduate student, I’ve decided to do an internship program in RAW to expand my exploration, get new experiences as well as new perspectives towards architecture and life.

The 24th of November, 2021 is the day RAW offered me a chance to do the internship program which I had applied 3 months before. I still remember the feeling of waiting and how excited I got when Kak Yudith contacted and offered me the internship program. To be honest, the journey to get to that day wasn’t easy, and I guess that’s what makes that day so special. Through this letter, I would like to express my gratitude towards the RAW family, especially Kak Rich and Kak Yudith, for giving me a chance to learn, meet, and work with amazing people in RAW Studio.

These past 4 months, RAW hadn’t only become my workplace but also my home. To work in RAW, I had to leave Surabaya, the place where I grew up and live for 21 years. Surabaya was my comfort zone, but I am glad that I had decided to step out of it, even for only a few months. Within 4 months in RAW, I had learnt and gained a lot of knowledge and experiences which gave me a whole new perspective towards architecture, world, and even life. I had learnt new things that can only be obtained through the field experience. I learnt that architecture, details, construction, craftsmanship, and communication are inseparable. But, the thing I am most grateful for is that I was never alone. Going through this big change and process of knowing architecture, myself, and life, I was lucky enough to experience it with the best people in the world:)

RAW has taught me that architecture is also about being part of a community and family. I believe that to create amazing architecture, it also takes amazing teamwork and community. During my internship, every once in a while, Kak Rich brought up this question about “what is our purpose in life?”. This got me thinking, “what do I want in life?”, “where am I heading to?”, “is architecture part of my purpose in life?”. I have been trying to find the answer to these questions, until this one moment.

I remember when my mentor had to leave and continue her own journey outside RAW. Kak Rich had mentioned that she had “touched” everyone with her presence and her relationship with others. At that moment, I thought, how beautiful it is? If one is able to touch someone with their presence. That thought had made me reflect on myself. I guess for now I decided that my purpose is to be able to touch people with everything that I do, whether through my works in architecture, or even through my actions towards others.

Therefore, I am also thankful to Kak Rich, for bringing up questions that we were all afraid to ask ourselves. 4 months had passed so quickly. For all the knowledge, experience, wisdom, laughter and memories, I thank everyone. No words can’t describe how grateful I am to spend the last 4 months in this new home. Thank You Kak Rich for being such a humble person and for creating a supportive environment in RAW, Thank You everyone for welcoming me into RAW with a warm smile, I hope to see you all again!

Best Regards,

Angel Gabriella Kusuma

Tracing The Dots

See the video in facebook

Taylor University graduates invited me to share experience with dots in Realrich Architecture Workshop (RAW Architecture). I thought this presentation would be about not myself but the students and how they can trace their dots looking at the sharing. So I planned my presentation is about the unseen pathway and how to reconcile yourself if you face fear, failure, success, and further trauma. This presentation was the first time I tried to reconcile my experience, things that made me come back to Indonesia after working in London and studying in Sydney. My reason was my loved one, the willingness to make a family, and sacrifice by calculating the pros and cons. 1st that, obtaining an architect’s license for my with my b arch degree was not possible, I needed to extend my studies, took three different tests, and it cost five digits GBP. And it’s crossed with my ego. In the end, we discussed that Laurensia’s dentist license not be sacrificed. I can be more robust by practicing in Indonesia by winning competitions, and having a few projects run by developers and close relatives.

For me, architecture is very personal, which creates vital radiance to others as echoes, and the echoes represent other voices that might support and distract. The pathway to reconciling our own creates a more vital radiance that leads to the reality of our dream. By then, to build more vital radiance, I need to improve my resiliency by experiencing and maintaining my passion.

Ee Von tried to engage in discussions, which make deep talk in session and project the reality in our relationship with the client, not by saying yes or no, but by asking more profound questions that make me appreciate the options and ask the relevancy of the questions. In our journey in 2014, as a family, we got helped by Dhisti and Mirza as clients. They introduced some of the diagnoses and anticipation for my wife. By having that, Miracle was born 1.5 years after, and Heaven was born in 2020.

Life is unimaginable and an unexplored forest when I look back 20 years ago. Like many students will experience, but if I imagine now, I think everyone has their orbit and their rotation to get their purpose, contributing to others. My family is getting bigger, from Laurensia to Miracle, to Heaven, reconcile with my father, mother, brother and sisters, designers, librarians, colleagues, students, and clients. I am fulfilled and grateful for all of the blessings.

Practicing Design Philosophy

I was invited by Altrerosje Asri to share some how to practice philosophy in architecture. There are several questions that we can discuss in the class such as : What is the current crisis in architecture students and academia, and practitioners ? What is the problem ? Is there any correlation to understanding philosophy ?

I tried to digest this over and over in my practice, there are several possibilities in this hybrid world, digital which is in hyper speed and our offline world which is slow pace like our heart beat. Maybe the question of what your purpose is , become quite fundamental to reorient ourselves in both world.

The session includes the discussion with students in the middle of presentation. My presentation is quite fortunate to be able to see the lecturers : Altre, Joyce, and Wira stood back and let the students explored their purposes. I felt that everybody was rough, including my self, and we are finding ourselves sharpen our thought, words, and feeling to be better person.

After the session I felt that this kind of sharing and discussion including presentation is more fulfilling as it provides not only one way or top – down, but allowing guidance and unpredictable sequence for the students to tell their own story.

At the end, what’s the meaning of our life ?

For myself, it’s the contribution for our memories, not sentimental, but building a deeper conversations that brings memories.

.

My tears drop and I felt touch of heaven.

Project 18 – Otten Coffee Bandung

00-Otten Coffee Bandung
.

Architecturally The entrances also bring micro-climate from the solid – translucent canopy in the entrance as a promenade walk from the foyer to the living area. The house forms a castle of skylights in the hot, humid Alam Sutera area, forming an oasis outside. The idea is to have lights and air circulation with tiny gaps at the top of the skylights while providing thermal insulation to the house.

The house consists of 3 types of skylights. One is six primary tapered 3.0 x 3.0 m skylights. The second is the serviced 2.0 m x 3.5 m skylights that light the service area, the third is the smaller 0.5 m x 1.25 m skylight that illuminates the toilet area.

In this house, every room has natural lights. The white bricks are stacked at the front to accommodate privacy framing blue color door and view to the backyard. The living room exposed big glass openings towards the gardens by doing that. Reconstruction of the concept started from Lawang Pintu, meaning vista door that greeted the visitor with open space and continued the passage to Pendopo, meaning the arrival building. The Pendopo is the most prominent structure in the house consisting living room. The attached back part is the serviced area and bedrooms area organized by the tapered skylights roof.

The clients are simple people, the discussion in the project combined the grey plastered cement as a basis craftmanship to surface the house. Client’s Brief

Memories

by Obed Iskandar.

Home is a place to build memories. A place where I can introduce lots of things to kids. Most important aspect of home to me is light, light, and lights. The best feeling in the world is waking up from afternoon nap basked in golden sunset rays. I’m not much of a design/artsy person so interior wise, I’d left it to my wife. I’m easily satisfied in this sector. I’m more concerned on the quality and materials of the build. I will be happy if the house is uncluttered/tidy and the house is just running smoothly without any “tetek bengek” to deal with.

Rumah adalah tempat istirahat dan beraktifitas

by Della Wangsa.

Good planning tentang placement of everything is important to me too.

  • 2 Kamar Tidur Anak – Lantai 2 dengan 1 shared but separate bathroom
  • 1 Kamar Tamu – Lantai 1 dengan 1 shared bathroom with bathroom Lantai 1 (if possible ada 2 bathroom, 1 inside the guestroom and 1 for the guests)
  • Kitchen + Pantry + Dining Room – Lantai 1
  • Ruang Keluarga – Lantai 1
  • Library/Office/Playroom/Arts & Crafts area
  • Gudang besar untuk barang2/dus tidak terpakai
  • 2x Kamar pembantu dengan 1 shared but separate bathroom
  • Dapur Kotor
  • Future dog room/area
  • Area Laundry room/ruang cuci.

Kriteria Kamar Tidur Utama

Decent size, not to overly big but feel spacious. With walk-in closet & bathroom

Kriteria Kitchen

Baking is a big part of my life. Jadi kitchen area is really important. Good workflow and storage is a need. Connected to wet kitchen & pantry.

Kriteria Kamar Pembantu

Dua kamar with AC

Kriteria Garasi Mobil

Kriteria Dek Atas

Keran air dan clean station (if we need to clean dusty stuff).

Kriteria Taman

Provide a good shade, Easy maintenance, Not attracting scary bugs, Provide a good area for a child to grow up (play yard)

Project 16 – Piyandeling (Sederhana)

Project Description

Sederhana is another building from the whole of Piyandeling complex. This building is a one-floored building, just like its name, which is more simplistic than Sumarah and Kujang.

Imaginr-Bacteria

The building is constructed with stone as a podium. Still using bamboo as its main materials, bamboo is used to construct its roofs. The method to make its roof is called Talahap which is a traditional bamboo construction made from layering it on top of each other. The bamboo would then be layered with a waterproof membrane and nipah.

Project 15 – Piyandeling (Kujang)

Project Description

Kujang is another building from the whole of Piyandeling complex. This building is a two-floored building with a large open hall that is used for workshops or meetings.

Imagine-Bacteria

Upholding local vernacularity, Kujang is stretched out with its materials that consist of natural fiber or bamboo for its main structure and daun nipah as the coverage of its roof. The roof is shaped the familiar triangle as an expression of Indonesian vernacular architecture that creates a silhouette of a mountain.

Imagine-Bacteria
Imagine-Bacteria

The bamboos are transformed into balustrades with unique and aesthetic geometry. Not only does it appeal to the eyes, the geometry is also designed such that it will add the overall strength and rigidity of Kujang’s structure.

Imagine-Bacteria
Imagine-Bacteria
Imagine-Bacteria

The programming of the building requires the surface of its building to contact the earth as minimally as possible. As a solution, Kujang is also designed with a floating structure underneath. This solution also acts as a response to the environment of the site that faces struggle in gathering clean water caused by water pipes that are not accommodating enough. With its floating structure, waters are ensured to follow directions to the land.

Evanjelicel Tamio – Universitas Pelita Harapan

Firstly, I really want to take a part and give my best strength to the amazing team and architecture that RAW’s built. Personally I am amazed and have studied some of RAW’s works through books, online publications and social media, especially when I visited and directly enjoyed The Guild and Alfa Omega schools. For me, studying architecture is about curiosity and questions, of course this is very fun and challenging, but it’s time for that challenge to no longer come from something fictitious like a problem in the studio. This thought arose because I felt that I really did not understand the world of architecture when working in the field directly. from there I realized that architecture must be learned from it’s experts; I want to get the right place and mentor to improve the quality and professionalism of myself and the architecture that I will build in the future. And I believe that RAW architecture will give me just that and more experiences that I never expected before.

Hybrid Indonesian Architecture by Realrich Sjarief | Principal Architect of RAW Architecture

When Yann Follain asked me to join him in Making of Architecture TAB Series 2, I looked at several other presenters such as Goy Architects, Ply Studio Architects, and Chat Architects. They discuss the discourse of making in their regions. Some of them have even done cross-regional lessons in their architectural project. I had in my mind to reinterpret the word discussed in LSAI (Lembaga Sejarah Arsitektur Indonesia) at the beginning of the year. That word is “decolonization architecture.” These complex layers that enrichen Indonesia’s Architecture resulted from a hybrid architecture.

.

Critical and creative analysis. It’s part of unitizing materials of projects, wisdom, knowledge, and an open attitude to become one language of hybridization in RAW Architecture as case studies. I started the presentation by discussing rhythm 0 by Marina Abramović, and she did the art performance of letting people do something without doing anything. She left the act almost naked. That shows what happens if we stay silent, give up, and remain passive. That includes the condition of the colonization era and how the political affects architecture.

.
It’s a reflection that will elaborate on the study and transformation of vernacular and traditional roots in creating a Hybrid Indonesian Architecture. I believe that architects, in this case, “we” have territory, cultures, political and economic systems built from vernacular tectonics, method (Design-Thinking), and craftmanship (Design Making). The hybridization of these systems can inform the development of a new approach to architecture, deep-rooted in the rich understanding of local crafts and contexts. This condition paves the way for a process of ‘Decolonisation,’ marking a “cultural, psychological, and economic freedom” practiced by humanity to achieve Indigenous Sovereignty — the right and ability of architects to practice self-determination through collaborations with society.

.
So this is an attempt to put RAW Architecture, DOT Workshop, Omah Library in the act of reflections as activists to move on our limitations in one short presentation and discussion with Yann Follain. He is the curator of this TAB series and principal of Wy -To architects.

.

Here are the list sent by Yann Follain,

Q3 #07, Goy Architects :

  • Q3 #08, Ply Studio Architects :
  • Q3 #09, CHAT Architects :

Gabriela Marcelina – Universitas Kristen Petra

Hello! My name is Gabriela Marcelina, but everyone usually calls me Gaby. I’m in the seventh semester of my architecture studies at Petra Christian University. I come from Surabaya, who from birth to age 21 always “played” not far from Surabaya. Until in the middle of 2021, I, who had become interested in architecture, decided to step outside of my comfort zone to explore and learn more about architecture by doing an internship at RAW architecture. Long story short, when I first started studying architecture, I didn’t really understand what architecture was, “What did I learn? What brought me here?”.

Until, finally, in the 3rd semester, I began to gain a better understanding of what architecture is and why architects are needed. I recall it vividly. It was the start of the 3rd semester, and we were given a task to design a multi-mass restaurant. At the time, my thought was, “Well, it’s gonna be fun; I can design a restaurant however I want.” But, over time, throughout the tutoring process, I was taught that it is essential to design a building that is not only of our own volition (the designer) but also one that can “please” its residents or visitors. Later, I was asked by my tutor to do a personal analysis of the human programmatic study, which at that time I did not understand the purposes, “what for? There’s already on Neufert book.” Until as time goes by, when I entered the designing process, I just understood the purpose of my tutor telling me to do programmatic analysis, which it helped me realizes that I can’t only make visually beautiful buildings. But, it is also necessary to create buildings that can make the residents or visitors feel comfortable and safe by studying their behaviour.

Through the knowledge that I got, I am very grateful because it has helped me become a more critical, detailed person who thinks holistically, both in the design process during studio projects in school or competition, and in daily life. Also through lessons during my studies in school about behavioural, biophilic and sustainability, I become concerned and interested in people, nature, space, existence and future. Since there are many processes that I go through while studying architecture in school, I become more “hungry” for architectural knowledge that occurs in real life. “What does the real-life architecture look like?”. This question has been in my head a lot when I was in school. Therefore, to answer the curiosity that has been suppressed for too long, I finally got up the courage and decided to go through the internship at RAW Architecture.

One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was to apply for an internship at RAW Architecture. I’d like to express my gratitude for giving me the opportunity to join the RAW Architecture family. When it comes to applying to RAW, one of my main goals is to learn. Until, finally, during my internship, what I learned about architecture in RAW far exceeded my expectations. I was very guided in learning about real life architecture in RAW. Every time I get a new assignment, I am very delighted because every time I completed the task, I gain a lot of insight and knowledge that at first appears to be very unfamiliar to my ear. Every day in the studio, I will definitely hear, understand, and learn new vocabulary about architecture and drawing techniques that I have never had known before. Aside from learning about architecture through RAW, I also often get insights about life, which help me to develop and grow into a better person.

Through this testimony, I would also like to thank:

1. Kak Rich who is always willing to share his knowledge and insights with others. For example, Kak Rich always gives us much insight about hard skills or soft skill tips related to the studio project every Monday meeting. He also always encourages us to learn writing, and one time he’s willing to teach us about communication skills despite his busy schedules. Also thanks to the presence of Kak Rich, who is always humble and appreciates both the small and big things, the studio environment becomes very friendly, cool, and fun.

2. Kak Timbul, Kak Vivi, Kak Alim, Kak Rico, Kak Riyan, Kak Pandu, Kak Tyo, Kak Haykal, Kak Vyan, Kak Khafid, Kak Mei-Mei, and Kak Fina, who have always been willing to take time out of their busy schedules to teach me about architecture, software, as well as life lessons and many more. Thank you for always sharing with me about life insights, always being happy to answer every question that I had about my studies in school when I was confused, always making me laugh with their hilarious jokes, always giving valuable advices, and never making me feel left out.

3. My internship friends, Celind, Neilson, and Kak Ubi, who are always willing to help and teach me whenever I’m unsure and confused about something and are very fun to talk to.

4. The other members of RAW Architecture, who are always friendly to me and never make me feel excluded while in RAW.

Lastly, I’m extremely happy and grateful to be a part of the RAW Architecture family. Even though I am currently far away from my family, I feel very happy to have a new family in Jakarta who is willing to accept me, guiding me from zero, and always wholeheartedly gives me a bunch of knowledge. Surely, all of my experiences and memories in RAW architecture will definitely be remembered fondly in my heart. RAW architecture is indeed the best office ever! ^^

Gaby’s Birthday

Meeting Craftsmanship Hermit – A Tactical Architecture Design

I will give workshop and sharing in Taylor University Malaysia. It’s first session for my being adjunct associate professor in there. I received invitation by Veronica Ng for the vision to share similar / contextual inspirations in South East Asia Region to redefine our own asian heritage.

Here is the explanation for the session.

Craftsmanship is the art of making, which involves traditional and industrial techniques. It is implemented and synthesized by people from multidisciplinary fields such as makers, engineers, design specialists, or even master artisans. The boundary between what architects did and what the other discipline is precise. The next question is, Is the implementation of craftsmanship that clear? The presentation will share an unorthodox view about making architecture from the importance of the craftsman guild, a workshop area for experimenting, extending to an ecosystem of builders that support the architect. The guild in the project also has memories that became grammar. It’s designed for the experimentation itself and, last but not least, for the clients that support you.

For the executions, some preparations are needed, such as grammar, drawing, critical thinking, creativity on-site to achieve a healthy ecosystem for making architecture. It’s about know-how on joineries and deconstructing dimensional mind that using the available material and adaptive technique is the forefront runner for architecture ecosystems that create the diversity of architecture.

The sharing sesion will be 25th October 2021 at 02.30 pm

If you care about only your name, the limit is in the name itself.

If you care only about other people’s name the limit is in the other’s people name in your mind.

If you care about only your workshop, the limit is in the workshop itself

If you care about only your progress in Guha, the limit is in the Guha itself

If you care about introversion of yourself, the limit is in the introversion of yourself.

Saya sering bilang,

Lu’luil Ma’nun

di @betseenarsi (All of thing bertween Arsitektur and Site)
  • Saya ingin mengarahkan otak saya selalu tidak pernah berhenti mengeluarkan ide-ide ditempat yang tepat.
  • Saya suka membaca berulang-ulang buku “The Secret of Architect’s Life ”
  • saya baru mulai benar-benar memahami apa itu skripsi
    setelah membaca buku “Methodgram”

Guha by RAW architecture has been shortlisted in the business building category of Dezeen Awards 2021

Guha is shortlisted in the Dezeen Awards 2021 in business category ^^ Guha is a craftsman organic laboratory. It’s a building based on the transformation of experimentation of multiple materials.

Thank you for Dezeen, and we are together with Sanya Farm Lab by CLOUD Architects, FRizz23 by Deadline Architects, Imatra Electricity Substation by Virkkunen & Co. Architects, and Nodi by White Akitekter. They are great architects that we admire and learn from (their framework, design approach, detail, and many more).

After this, it’s a public vote ^^. Hopefully the process of transformation in Guha will always bring in-depth learning for us that can be shared to other people.

Guha by RAW architecture has been shortlisted in the business building category of Dezeen Awards 2021. RAW Architecture has designed Guha to accommodate offices, architecture studios, and dental clinics.

RAW Architecture implements a sustainable design approach in an effort to contribute to human and environmental sustainability by reducing carbon footprints. Departing from the context of the tropical climate in Indonesia with high rainfall and sunlight intensity, the space is designed to be responsive to the climate.

This is manifested in the layout of mass and space-oriented to the path of the sun, while the skin plays a role in reducing sunlight as well as air circulation. It is also supported by details through craftsmanship-making processes.

This project has been shortlisted in the business building category of Dezeen Awards 2021.

My team and I are really pleased to get the news :) hoping the architecture in Indonesia can spread to the world. Congrats to @guhatheguild @realricharchitectureworkshop @omahlibrary and all of the team, clients, including craftsmen, and friends. #formingbricolage

Surabaya – In Father’s Workshop

Looking back, I was born in Surabaya, near the poor slum area where there were crazy people, prostitutes, and the gap between rich and poor. Our family lived on Jalan Dukuh Kupang Timur gang 13 no. 75. I grew up and played in several alleys adjacent to Dolly’s Gang, which signifies the gap between a paradoxical iceberg phenomenon related to the necessities of life and the city’s identity.

I met one kid named Hamid every day, and he is a crazy toddler. Every time I pass him, I look at his genuine behavior such as running while showing arm-pit, laughing a lot unpretentiously, and always half-naked, walking without clothes. I asked my mother, who is Hamid. I found out that he came from a low-income family, his father and mother had many children, and his home is beside my grandmother’s home. I enjoyed it when I saw him, and it looked like he found his inner joy even though other people couldn’t understand him. He has a smile on his face, and I smile because of that. His smile is contagious, and my mother used to say,

“are you crazy? stop smiling and daydreaming.”

My father worked in Jakarta, and my mother, me, and three brothers were in Surabaya.

My father comes home once a week. The trip to pick up my father at the airport along with my mother is a lasting memory. We made The journey to Juanda airport at night. Usually, my father lands at 19:30, my mother drives, and we pass Waru, where rice fields stretch on the dark horizon. The journey was quiet, and we listened to the only sound of church songs set in a red civic car.

This red civic car is quite an impression because this is my father’s first car where he gave this car to my mother in Surabaya, while my father himself used a green used Kijang in Jakarta. It’s a pickup car. The pickup often gets hit and crashes because the driver is also a beginner or an impromptu driver, my father’s handyman. Uniquely, the green deer has an air conditioner that is colder than my mother’s honda civic. As if some futuristic junk, my dad didn’t have enough of one. He had two.

Our house in Dukuh Kupang consists of two plots, and each property has its access road. The left lot has garage door access with doors made of stainless steel pipes. At the same time, the right plot has one height with a canopy of thin iron plates, which is the entrance to the main house, while on the left, there is a small building plan field on the perimeter of the building. On this side, there is a small workshop, in which there is a chicken coop, craftsmanship tools such as saws, chisels, hammers, nails, or used plywood boards.

I was lucky because my mother was super busy at that time. She was active in the catholic group. When I was six years old, she cooked cookies to sell and loved to go to prayer groups. She is a busy person.
My mother likes to bake cakes to give or sell to people. She is pretty independent and firm in educating us, four sons. I know that our mother and father are always busy. I always like to accompany my mother for prayers or gatherings with church gatherings. While my mother was super busy, I had my own time in the workshop. I adored my father’s trace in the workshop, not because I saw his work or how he was working but simply because of the experiments he allowed me to do, and he always encouraged us to build our stuff. This workshop is where I make my wooden sword. One time, I created my sword using plywood. I used a saw to cut the plywood and make my toy. I get a feeling that we can make things by ourselves, even though it’s probably not perfect if seen by others, but it was perfect for me. I was proud of my toy.

Our residence is also adjacent to the carpenter’s house. From the front, you can see people passing by, and the workshop is always busy. Every time I pass the carpenter, I see piles of doors and wood – used wood. I just found out that Mr. Pardi, the head of the workshop, is a confidant of my father, who helped him make the doors for his project. Every year my mother and father always held a big meal celebration. All the chief craftsmen and their deputies will be present. The event was about chatting until the morning, including drinking events that have become their tradition. It’s an act of gratefulness celebrating the spirit of togetherness. It’s started by my grand father.

One time my father invited us to Jakarta, we stopped at my father’s boarding house. The room was small but warm. There my mother decided to help my father. From there, we plan to move to Jakarta. Leaving Surabaya was not easy. I had fallen in love with my freedom to play in my father’s workshop, chasing chickens, but seeing my father’s face when he landed and showing his face at the arrival gate made me miss. Maybe my mother wanted us to grow up together. I am in 3rd grade, and my little brother is going to kindergarten, my second big brother is in 6th grade, and my first big brother is going to 1st grade of high school. At that time, I was pretty sad that I had a feeling to move, where I already had my comfort zone in Surabaya. I didn’t know what would happen in Jakarta. I missed my playground, workshop, our fantastic house, and activity in praying groups. But I was excited to experience life with my father. I can see him every day, and It must be exciting.

I write this to show how I am thankful to my parents that have nurtured me and inspired me. They helped me grow, showing an example and encouraging me always to show my best, focus, be happy, and respect people without expecting somebody to listen while singing and dancing.

Up front, an educator must set a good example. In the middle or among students, the teacher must create initiatives and ideas. From behind, a teacher must provide encouragement and direction“,

Redefine Role

It took years to redefine the role and responsibility of people in the studio Realrich Architecture Workshop. Below, I have written 4 roles to simplify how we work as a team and my responsibility as principal. These 4 roles are 4 different worlds, the associate designer is a world of techne, a world of architecture methodology grammar. That is the world of a design methodology. The second world is administration which is the world of matters, currency, and reality. It consists of archives and a way to survive. On the other hand, The Librarian and researcher in the world of episteme. It involves theorizing reality and fantasy. And, the last one in the world of phronesis is practical knowledge, which is called the craftsmen world. Below are the pictures of the dream team – Best Office in the World.

Principal Architect

As a principal, I am responsible for designing the vision and implementing the studio’s mission, making initial sketches, or discussing our experiments with the design team and clients. Our studio can develop from detail, materiality, and context understanding because the design is a collaborative process. This is possible in direct coordination with the design team, the associate designers, therefore.

The process of appointing us as an architectural firm is not easy to require. The relative compatibility is shown through a shared vision, a common goal, or simply a common approach. Once the client entrusts the results and process to us, it is the most valuable thing in the world of architecture.

From details to design concepts, the whole work shows how consistent we are with the richness of a multi-perspective, multi-disciplinary, multi-interest architectural approach. The entire procedure is evaluated in the form of architectural theory and is widely published.
It aims to jointly support the appreciation of architecture and the architectural profession in Indonesia. I believe that architecture, when thought out, is a powerful force that can improve the lives of many people.

Associate Designer

Associate designers at RAW Architecture have 1 year to 5 years of experience. The designers will be trained to reach the level of becoming a registered architects. They are connected in a studio where practical case studies are discussed to become a comprehensive grammar studio. In general, in some studios, the associate designer is called a junior architect or architectural assistant part 2 for ARB (Architect Registration Board) standardization. The name about this is related to habits and the meaning you want to aim for. I think there is a fundamental concept that is our studio culture about interpersonal relationships. I answered it with the idea of associate or associated with a collaborative, personal, and multi-personal design process. The associate is a concept that connects people’s social relationships with one another. A designer is someone who tries to solve design problems.

The learning process to become an associate designer at our studio has two paths. The first path is learning at the conceptual stage, then understanding how to draw technically well. The second path is to learn directly in the field, know the construction details, and then dismantle the knowledge of architectural concepts. Associate designers are people who have creative and critical power in answering architectural problems. The architectural design process faced by associate designers starts from reading the situation and context, dialogue with the principal for formulating design steps, managing project management, and carrying out forensic engineering with the integration of multi-disciplinary knowledge.

The association’s conception experiences a shift in meaning and reality every time due to the complexity of ethics, capabilities, and professional facts that the Indonesian Architects Association constantly updates.

Administration

The people in the administration department are responsible for documenting project archives, studios, libraries, including keeping the discipline of the large team as simple as possible regarding the neatness of bookkeeping related to taxes, accounting, finance, taxes, public relations, and personnel. Administrative tasks are carried out by recording chronologically according to job categories with an integrated system. The administration team led by Drg. Laurensia Yudith maintains client relations and reports with the principal to maintain the studio’s accountability and credibility.

Librarians and Researchers

The people involved in this division work in the Omah library. They are librarians who catalog and archive books. Librarians also have duties as researchers who carry out writing and production of knowledge through architectural literacy. Furthermore, the activity at Omah Library is to dialogue about relevant thought discourses with individuals who have critical thinking about everyday problems. At Omah Library, librarians and researchers also help develop architectural theory and archive case studies to form the basis for further architectural discourse. Librarians and researchers generally have 1 – 5 years of experience with multi-perspective thinking and comprehensive literacy skills. There are times when I invite them to develop architectural theories that are useful for our practice.

Craft Leader

The Craft Leader here means the leader of the builder who dedicates his time to the art, passion, and ability to not only build but make building art with taste and become a focus for subordinates indirect work or provide direction. The educational process to become a craftsman leader starts from the assitant, 1/2 craftsman, craftsman, executive craftsman, master craftsman. They are people who have 25-35 years of experience starting from before our studio was founded, during the time of my grandfather and parents. They have 10-25 years of practical experience who have had at least 3 built projects. In the next stage, the chief craftsman transforms into an advisor of art in building. They have worked from Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, to Sulawesi.

Epilogue

Documentation of how we work, my interpretation of the ecosystem. The practical craftsmanship of RAW Architecture in Indonesia is being compiled in a manuscript on the philosophy of thinking about the roots of our craft school as a small, mutually supportive ecosystem.

– Fadiah Nurannisa

Fadiah Nurannisa as the best designer of the month

Farewell Memory with Fadiah Nurannisa

Thank you Bund :D” – Alim Hanafi

Keep being you yaa, keep humble :)” – Vivi yani santosa

“Happy graduation kak Icha! Soalnya kayanya seru gitu orangnya. Gabisa ngomong terlalu banyak, tapi semoga bahagia bahagia terus ya! Jangan lupa bahagia, selamat menapak hidup baru!” – Tyo

“Untuk Icha, I do feel grateful to have met you in these past 2.5 years. I learned from you how to deal with people and maintaining balance between them and yourself. Sorry banyak jd tempat curcol. wkwk. Semoga kedepannya lebih baik, dan welcome to another phase of your life. Great work!” – Satria A Permana

“Icha is a strong independent women. she has unique sense of sensitivity to the environment she’s living in, a “Yoni” and also a mother figure to many people who are close to her. saya suka panggi icha ibu, karna sosoknya emang rada keibuan, pakaian warna warni persis seperti ibu saya :) pandai membangun hubungan dengan para tukang dan juga kolega lintas divisi. shes a loose person who can adapt easily to many kind of situations and persons which make her a quite unique person. sukses buat Icha kedepan semoga bahagia.” – Timbul

“Kak Icha has plenty of experience that can easily be seen through when we are gazing towards her. When I hear her report every monday, it seems like all of those stuffs are easily managed and controlled by her, calmly but surely. Aside from her ability on work, her other side that is humorous, friendly, and really kind, will come up immediately on non-work hours. She is very kind, and easy-going. Very calm though I can expect that the stuff she needs to do and have responsible on is quite many, demanding and crucial. I am wishing the best for Kak Icha’s next plan in the future. I hope everything that Kak Icha has ever wanted will easily show itself, and go towards the wanted track. I also hope that there will still be a time and a chance for Kak Icha to meet and play again with RAW and OMAH family in the future. Wishing you the best of luck, kak!” – Avinsa Haykal

“halo kak ica! hehehe walaupun br kenal kurang lebih 3 mingguan, tp super hepi bisa kenal sama kak ica! kak ica orangnya fun, keibuan juga hehehe sama yg paling menonjol sih kak ica orangnyabtegas tapi asik! hehehe semoga sukses selalu kak kedepannya! makin banyak peluang yang datang dan jadi pribadi yang tetap cheerful! God bless & stay safe also stay healthy kak! 😙” – Gabriela Marcelina

Universitas Esa Unggul

I graduated from DIII Midwifery in 2016, then continued my education for the undergraduate level of Hospital Management at Esa Unggul University. I graduated in 2019, and My work experience and internships were in several hospitals, health centers, independent clinics, and midwives. I like a lot of things and want to learn wherever it is because, in my opinion, learning is not only focused on one goal or one major that we are studying. I am learning can be taken from many sides. That’s why this is one of the reasons I was able to join here to be a part of this family. It started from what I had not been able to do until now. One step ahead, I have learned what the intent and purpose of what I do is. I hope that with me joining the team here, I can be one of the best among the good.

With my experience of working for almost five years, I am pretty proud of what I can do and learn here because, for some people, it is not easy to want to learn again from scratch. Still, I chose to be able to learn again from the beginning starting from the very beginning. I did not understand anything until finally here I could understand and learn a lot of things. Work and Play is my motivation. It means I can work while playing and complete the job properly and correctly according to what a boss wants. I hope that what is already in here can always be adequately maintained and further appropriately developed to become better individuals in the future. If there are still things that are not good, let’s learn together to improve. I am pleased because I can be a part of this RAW Architecture.
